My all tube 2.0 system, through Magneplanar 3.6/R speakers is absolutely holographic.......no need for excessive digital "processing".

Now more than ever you need to be smart and separate marketing hype from meaningful improvements IN YOUR SPECIFIC SITUATION.
Do we really need a new phone every year, just because it is released? No.
The resolving power of our eyes is finite, depending on viewing distance and screen size, even 4k may not make sense.
Where do you draw the line in the number of speakers you add for object-based formats?
Just because it can be complicated, it does not have to be. Especially with audio, often less is more.

this has come up before.....the oldies but goodies (over 55) are content with as minimal a system as possible and dont understand the more is better
the youngin's (under 55) love technology and want that theater at home experience...no matter the format
I am of the latter.....and of course this is a generalization....always exceptions or could be completly off
i LOVE tech...when somthing new comes out...i will NEVER swear it off as a fad or gimmick....i try it first...if it doesnt wo me so be it. but more often than not...it wows me...and I benefit from trying it

Unlike my two-channel tendencies, I'm oddly content with 1080p/5.1 for movies and I'm a HUGE movie fan. I think my modest 5.1 system (Denon AVR + old speakers/sub) sounds really good and my pro calibrated Panasonic VT60 looks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really respect companies like Emo who can remain current and competitive in what I think is a frantic market space. I mean, ponder the relatively glacial pace at which amplifier technology changes when compared to home theater decoding/video/audio calibration. So, yes, if I were on the continual home theater upgrade path, the rich enjoyment of cinema would erode in my life. Exactly! Bill

They just talk about if they liked a movie, or not. So I disagree that age is the separating factor. People either embrace or are bewildered 😳 by tech. regardless. Bill

Audio is one of his hobbies and is a teacher of Electrical engineering with a doctorate. Has a full HT setup with Swan drivers in tow. Has no interest, however in object based audio whatsoever. I don't know anybody who is content with using an iPhone speaker for anything except calling "Mom". Bill

Yea I'm saving for the 8K display and all the gear to support it even though exactly zero content exists in 8K.

On a 75" TV there is basically no way to see a difference between 4k and 8k. Of course it is being done for marketing purposes and adding the extra pixels is probably fairly cheap.

Geezus. How many members here are actually under 40 ?? I totally feel like a minority. Unfortunately, the reality is, audiophilism(?) is expensive and best suited for those who are either "well off", or absolutely love all things audio and willing to sacrifice in other spots. That's pretty much two massive strikes against all generations younger than baby boomers. I'm pushin 40 myself, but grew up with parents turning over every penny twice before spending it. I can't seem to break those habits now even though I can afford it now. I always feel guilty dropping money on audio (and pleasure/sports/hobbies in general). im JUST past the 40 threshold....and Ive always been in the camp...you cant take the money with you when your gone...so enjoy life and its spoils. having said that...I have pieced together...and upgraded little by little when i can. but I agree...for some reason my minds eye has everyone on here around my age....I didnt realize I am MUCH younger than most on here....but then again...i consider myself still 30 lol

David, I would love to see glassless 3D come down the pike and I thought I heard the higher pixel rate was one of the keys to this. If all of that comes together, I would be on board. So far as conventional viewing is concerned, I'm using the "Ultra HD up conversion" on both 3D players in my system (one Sony, one Samsung) and that works fine for me, for now. I've also been reading some, that many "eyes" cannot even profit from 4K, let alone anything higher. That being said, I've got homework to do. Bill

firstly.....yes at normal viewing distances and screen sizes....the eye cannot see the benefits of 4k. but its the HDR with WCG that is the REAL benefit of 4k and i presume higher,,,.....and the difference when done right is astounding.
and I agree glasses free 3d would be AWESOME.....Disney theme parks have developed the tech (note Epcot etc has had their own version of ATMOS in the American Adventure theater since '82) so its doable....and would be quite popular...although I am pretty sure the 3d at commercial theaters is on the decline....but may change again....when no glasses are needed
right now (and i was a HUGE 3d fan even with glasses) I prefer 4k UHD over 3d

The trick is learning to be happy with great sounding equipment because you understand that once you get item X, you will not stop wanting to purchase item Y after that. It's a battle that only ends when you're dead, you run out of money, or you put your foot down and say "enough is enough". Case in point; for the last year I've been listening solely through my big ego and a $300 pair of Sennheiser. All the money spent on Kef, Paradigm before that, Pioneer + Marantz + Yamaha receivers, and Emotiva mini's + subs... all pointless and wasted money if I can be pretty much just as happy and satisfied with $400 worth of equipment.

Yeah, but not the processing power and bandwidth needed to handle FOUR times the number of those pixels 😁
