I have not been a headphone user and in fact the last headphones I purchased were a set of Pioneer SE 305 in 1980.
In the last week I have been researching headphones in the $200 range and have narrowed it down to either a set of HIFIMAN HE 4XX or
the Monolith M1060. This afternoon I plugged my $20 set of V-Moda earphones into the jack of the XSP and was really surprised with the lack of volume,
These earphones are much more livelier on my inexpensive droid. Is there a setting inside the XSP to get more volume besides the volume control itself ?
Thank you in advance for any helpful replies, I'd hate to invest this kind of money into a set of headphones if I can not fully enjoy them with my Emotiva.

The XSP-1 doesn't have a lot of headphone output power. I could easily get it to clip on my Sennheiser HD600. The XDA-2 had a little bit more power but not much. For a very powerful headphone amp, you may be interested in the bas-x a-100 or wait for Emotiva's upcoming balanced class A Headphone amp. I am currently thinking of upgrading my headphones too to the Sennheisser HD700.

I would get one if I were you. But perhaps you may be fine without one. It's up to your requirements and expectations

Thank you for the response, So I will still need to purchase a external headphone amp then. For $99 this is an outstanding headphone amp, I run a Asgard 2 which is a Class A amp but I have owned the Magni in the past and it has outstanding power and sound for $99. www.schiit.com/products/magni-1For reference a review of the Magni 3 www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xug-_-lPQXwChad

Just ordered an A-100, Kept in all in the family and have one of the worlds greatest headphone amps to boot. NICE!!! Make sure to try both modes - (with caution)) Use the XSP-1 volume control to lower the volume first to say -15 or so. and increase the A-100 volume knob from zero till its as loud as you want it - usually at about 11 o clock or so. Then just control the volume from the XSP-1 not the A-100
