Been using Roon for the last month and decided to purchase a lifetime license.
Currently looking into either building a NUC Rock, deploying Linux VM or using an unsupported docker, so I'm curious what folks are using for their Roon Core. Any info, opinion, what has worked / what hasn't, etc. is appreciated.

Mind sharing what you ended up building and what processor you used? i5? i7? Windows, Linux, other OS?

I've got my core on a cheap little Dell 660 desktop. It's a very basic machine, but it works fine as core.

Using a Small Green Computer sonicTransporter i5. You can go much cheaper but so far I love this thing.

I use an Asus Windows 10 pc. HIGHLY recommend you use a SSD whatever solution you use.

Mind sharing what you ended up building and what processor you used? i5? i7? Windows, Linux, other OS? Sure. It’s an AMD Athlon 5350 quad core on an MSI AM1-MB running Linux. 16 Gb ram, 128G SSD for the OS and 3x 2TB WD reds for music. Uses a Corsair silent power supply and passive CPU cooling to keep it quiet.

I use a headless 2012 Mac Mini in which I installed a small SSD drive. It has only Roon Server installed and many services disabled. If I were doing it over, I would purchase the specific hardware and go with R.O.C.K (Roon Optimized Core Kit) Roon Optimized Core Kit

SGC sonicTransporter i7 here. Always does what I ask it to and sounds great. Happy listening.

I went totally Over The Top as is my normal way. I have a AMD Ryzen 1500X-based system with 32GB of 2667MHz Memory, a 512GB NVMe Samsung 960PRO SSD Root Disk, and a 8TB Western Digital Red 7200RPM Music Drive. I'm currently running Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (4.15.0-43-generic). I bought a Roon lifetime subscription back in November 2017.
This is wildly more than needed for Roon or any of the other services I have running on it (Bind, DHCP, etc.) but it's cool ... It does make very quick work of building the initial Roon Database from my currently 5.2TB music collection ...
All of this was working very nicely for over a year till mid-December 2018 when all hell broke loose and it's now totally flakey with Roon Server stalls/restarts caused by Roon Server Thread crashes. I've been working with the Roon Support Team for over a month now trying to suss out what's going wrong. I managed to trigger an ASSERT() on Friday so I'm hoping that will provide them with more direct evidence of the cause, but my guess is that it's probably just random memory corruption ... possibly based on the content of the music collection and/or a Roon Database corruption ... Over all, the Roon Support Team has been attentive and seems to care about resolving the issue ... it's just a really nasty bug ...

Ha, sounds similar to what I did with my unRAID server as it's based on a Ryzen 1800x, 32GB RAM, 30TB of storage, 1TB of SSD Cache for VMs and dockers, etc. etc.
Sorry to hear you're having an issue, but glad that Roon support has been attentive. Hope it gets resolved quickly...

It's the same PC I use to run Dirac, and was what I ran Tidal and jRiver from to my DAC (USB) before I got Roon an the rendu stuff. Mark

Just a general word on SSDs......
Yes, if you're building a new machine, it's well worth using an SSD.....
HOWEVER, even if you're re-purposing an old laptop, it is well worth upgrading it to an SSD... Even a really old, really slow, computer will boot stunningly faster if you upgrade its old rotary drive to an SSD... (I put an SSD in an old single-core Celeron laptop - and its boot time went from over a minute to under fifteen seconds.)
Note that an SSD impressively improves anything that relies on a lot of disc accesses - like booting.... It also makes the computer quieter because you've removed the spinning disc. And, because most SSDs use less power, the computer will probably run cooler, so the fan will run slower and less often, which also makes it quieter.
(But it doesn't help processing power at all.)
And, nowadays, SSDs have gotten quite cheap...
I use an Asus Windows 10 pc. HIGHLY recommend you use a SSD whatever solution you use. For sure, SSD is the only way I would go if I build or go with a NUC as spinning rust is significantly slower. Thanks!

Yes, I agree with KeithL. I have an old Summer 2010 Macbook Pro that was showing increasing time with the "Spinning Beachball From Hell" and I replaced it's 2.5" SATA disk with a Samsung 950PRO and the laptop was suddenly useful again. (I'm still using it and hoping to nurse it along for another couple of years.) Casey
