SSD change everything.
Friend of mine gave me a 2007 iMac. Following the iFixit steps, I installed an SSD and it's a speedy computer now.

... All of this was working very nicely for over a year till mid-December 2018 when all hell broke loose and it's now totally flakey with Roon Server stalls/restarts caused by Roon Server Thread crashes. I've been working with the Roon Support Team for over a month now trying to suss out what's going wrong. I managed to trigger an ASSERT() on Friday so I'm hoping that will provide them with more direct evidence of the cause, but my guess is that it's probably just random memory corruption ... possibly based on the content of the music collection and/or a Roon Database corruption ... Over all, the Roon Support Team has been attentive and seems to care about resolving the issue ... it's just a really nasty bug ... After a lot of debugging on my part I was able to isolate the problem down the a new asset in the music collection: Qua Continuum's Continuum One in DSD256/DSF. This is a single 53m:11s track clocking in at 8.5GB. The Roon Server crashes trying to perform it's "Audio Analysis" of this cut. The crash appears to be a write beyond a buffer end leading to random memory corruption. Hopefully now with this information, the Roon Support Staff will be able to identify and correct the bug in their code.
