Hello all.
Been awhile since I've been on the boards. I've got a UMC-1 I've been driving hard in my Home theater for right at 10 years now. Finally pulled the trigger on an upgrade to a NAD t785 V3 a few days ago.
That leaves me with a perfectly good processor that I could use elsewhere (since I doubt I could sell it to anybody for enough to even cover shipping). I'd like to move it into my bedroom where it could handle some minor hdmi switching on my TV (the few times I actually watch it) and combine it with a 2 channel amp to drive a pair of Infinity Beta 40 towers.
What I'd like to do is mainly focus on a 2.1 Vinyl playback setup. This means I would need to come up with both a phono preamp and a 2 channel power amp to drive the speakers. I don't want to spend a ton (considering the AVR upgrade and some sub/speaker additions I'm also doing), but would like decent perfromance/quality. Also tubes (either in the preamp, the power amp, or both)! Love the sound of good tubes. Plus they're just plain cool! I know they can be spendy, but I'm hoping someone might have a suggestion that is cost effective.
I've currently got a decent Audio-Technica AT-LP3BK turntable. Nothing fancy, but it does have a built in preamp that could save me a little money in the short term. Down the road I might look at getting a better turntable. Definitely looking external preamp first, however.
As for the power amp, I know the speakers will handle 125wrms each with out blinking. Even ran them pretty well with a vintage Sansui receiver for awhile (think that was around 50-80wrms/channel if I remember correctly.) If I wanted to get into a decent 2 channel tube driven power amp, what kind of minimum wattage should I be looking at?
I'd say my overall time frame/budget is probably in the next 6 months for no more than $200-300 for everything. I'm even open to a good DIY kit for the amps, if it gets me a better bang for my buck. Anything with good sound quality that falls in that price range and meets my requirements?
Thanks!
