I've a friend shopping for new speakers (he doesn't want used or DIY) in the $1,000 / pair range. He also doesn't want bookshelf-sized speakers since he can't afford a subwoofer in the immediate future.
So this means that he's shopping for tower speakers with extended bass response for NOT MORE THAN his $1K budget. He also doesn't care about home theater - stereo only. Please reread the previous sentence about five or ten times!
My obvious recommendation to him is a pair of Emotiva T2s at the limit of his price range. They are neutral, have a great tweeter, and kick it in the bass. But before that recommendation is made, what other competition is out there that meets his criteria and price limit? Youse guys should know, so I ask the question here. Remember the criteria - tower speakers (no stands required) - low bass response - don't care about HT use. What should he be researching?
Thanks - Boom

T2's seem like a smart recommendation. I liked the ELAC - Uni-Fi UF5 ($999) but I've only heard them a few times. The concentric midrange/tweeter is really great. The ELACs are elegant looking but that may not be in the criteria and it's so subjective.

Just another POV on the ELACs. I owned a pair for about 2 weeks and sent them back to Crutchfield. They sounded OK but just didn't have any pop or wow to me. Just a different opinion!!

What about internet direct?
With only a grand and only new I'd be looking at Zu Audio Omen Dirty Weekend or Tekton Lore or Lore Reference.
If he is looking for store bought I'd recommend the entry level Dali Oberon 5 or Monitor Audio Bronze 5 speakers.
What is upstream of the speakers?

My suggestion is the Phase Technologies PC 3.5 speaker. While technically a bookshelf speaker, it goes (legitimately) lower than the T2 towers (but not quite as high; 22k versus 28k). You can usually get a pair for a grand or less straight from the dealer. I've been running my Phase Tech PC-3 since 2001 and they are phenomenal. These were the speakers I brought into the local brick and mortar shop that did not carry Phase Tech and feigned knowledge of the brand to compare speakers in 2010. They bested speakers many times the cost of them; other people in the shop came to listen to them. I was asked not to bring them in any more.

My suggestion is the Phase Technologies PC 3.5 speaker. While technically a bookshelf speaker... But bookshelf speakers require stands. When you add 10 to 20% of the cost of the speakers themselves for good stands, you're above the target price. Of course, he COULD put them on top of upside-down trash cans (as I once did), but I can say from experience that the WAF is not what you might hope for...

They're rather large for bookshelf speakers, so stand height won't be that much. You can always go to Garden Ridge or Michael's on one of their 70% off days/weeks and get a couple of plant stands to put them on without breaking the bank.

The ELACs are elegant looking but that may not be in the criteria and it's so subjective. I'll vouch for the ELACs (Mine are Bookshelf UB-5) - however, if someone were thinking about these, I would recommend an "in-home audition" with a return policy. This for at least (2) reasons: 1. Like other Andrew Jones designs (KEF), they seem to be "Amp-Sensitive" [They sound better with some amps than others and seem to benefit from a dose of "over-Amping"] 2. They seem to take a while to "break-in" from new - so you may need to put a few actual listening hours on 'em before they sound like they should If the Pre-Amp / receiver scheme used will allow for it - in the future, adding a sub can really round things out I have not heard them (yet), but the Adante series seems to have improved on the Uni-Fi series for modestly more moolah

How about a pair of Magnepan Mmg's and an affordable sub. Should all fit nicely in his $1000 budget.
Would be a killer 2.1 setup.
