Ok .. so still thinking about a new turntable.. two choices..
1. someone in my town is selling a nearly brand new Rega P2 for 500.00 . Has original carbon cartridge plus a second cartridge (Nagaoka MP-110). TT has all original packaging etc.
2. For a dollar less than he's asking I can get a brand new Fluance RT-85 (with acrylic platter and Ortofon Blue cartridge).
Maybe I can get his Rega for 350-400 without the agaokaa cartridge.
But then for 400 I can get the RT-84 (acrylic platter, Ortofon Red) ..
The new lines of Fluance TT are getting rave reviews (as do Rega of course)
Any comments?

I recently purchased a U-Turn Orbit Custom in green with acrylic platter and Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge, it's sitting at the border company where my buddy will be picking it up Friday and bringing into Canada for me, I can't wait.
Rega is supposed to be really good, even the P1 gets rave reviews.

I did not look into them, as far as I new they were a low end speaker maker, honestly I've never taken Fluance seriously haha

The ortofon 2m red and blue will sound very different than the Rega Carbon (probably Nagoaka too)
The Ortofon cartridges are known for detail, detail, detail. If you like the sound of an Emotiva DAC you'll like the Ortofon.
Personallly I found the 2m red and blue a little sterile for my taste. The rega carbon is not as detailed or clean sounding as the 2m red/blue, but for me it is more fun to listen too.
I had the 2m red/blue on a ProJect Debut Carbon then VPI Traveler. Now I have the Carbon on a Rega P2 so my analysis was over two different tables (VPI/Rega).

A Rega P2 with a Nagaoka MP-110 sounds good to me.

They both seem like good turntables, I personally would go with the rega, since they have been in the turntable market longer.

Ive been told the arm on this turntable is really good. If I can get the owner to lower price to 400 I'd jump on it. Might try to see if I can make the purchase without the additional Nagaoka cartridge. I don't see it as a major upgrade over the Rega Carbon, but maybe I'm wrong.

Fluance RT-81 for me....maybe I should have spent more money, but it sure beats the H.E. double hockey sticks out of the Realistic TT I was using...Lol

One little note about the Rega Planar -
If you listen in a room where people walk-by your TT location or if you like / have Subs on your TT System (or if you like to listen with it "cranked-up") - IIRC the Planar series has NO suspension. It's an excellent, basic TT and great for those who listen on headphones.
But, if any of the conditions above applies - you MAY be better-off with a TT that incorporates some sort of suspension in order to isolate the Tonearm & turntable from physical bouncing / vibration (as in footfalls or mechanical feedback from Sub-induced vibrations) When I started-out with my meager system - I often listened on headphones, but family members (Largish to plain LARGE Wisconsinites) kept walking past my equipment rack. Sometimes, I had downright "skipping" or bounce-noise in the music. Switching to my AR Turntable - which incorporates a pretty good spring suspension within it, FIXED the issues and I became a believer.
In the very least, for a TT with NO suspension - it may be advisable to place it on top of something HEA-VEE (like a slab of stone on top of foam rubber to make it anti-resonant). The mass below it will act like an "Inertial Stabilizer / Damper".
If I were in the market for a new TT, I took a browse on our local CL and see several VPI units out there for fairly decent money.

I’ve got a “decommissioned” AR XA turntable that now resides in my closet. That unique suspension system DOES solve skip/vibration issues, but not all. I had it in a second floor setup for a time and found out that if the ground ain’t solid, the tonearm would do a dance if you walked past it too close. Funny that the original advertisement for the AR turntable demonstrated tapping on the base with a hammer 🔨 without skipping! (I tried it myself and it was true!) Bill

Bill Yup - Had (2) friends in college who had older but well-loved and cared-for XB units They looked surprisingly primitive and simple, but with a well-matched cartridge, they played VERY nice music (After a few beers - we ALSO tried that "strike the plinth with a mallet" or block of wood = NO PROBLEM, keeps playing like nothing happened...) Mine is a "Newer" AR "The Turntable" from the Teledyne days with a newer, straight tonearm with more adjustments on it. If the floor or rack is "wobbly" - then even the BEST of Suspension Systems can only do so much good. If you're ever interested in tinkering with that "Classic" AR - look-up the Merril Mods (I think George Merril). Claimed ability to SIGNIFICANTLY enhance performance of old AR TTs...

Thanks for the lead.... I know lots of folks are wild for mods on those turntables, but my record days are done. Just prior to putting the XMC1 into service, I tied the turntable into my Home Theater with a fistful of my favorite albums. My old Theater Grand Processor had a raised phono input (almost unheard of in a high end AV) and that was my first and last record session. Bill

Just be careful with the traveler arm if you go that way. If you mishandle and break it, its $500 for a refurbished and $1,000 for a new arm (they can't fix an arm, but you have to trade it in to get the prices quoted). Its fragile. Edited TMI

Im also interested in going the turntable route. I see amazon has the Rega Planar 2 for 675.00 brand new. What else is needed to dip ones feet into the vinyl world other than records? LOL Im rocking the XMC1, XPA5, Outlaw 5000, VTA ST-120 tube amp, B&W cdm 9nt, and new Magnepan 1.7i's on the way. Combination of Home theater and 2 channel system. Other than interconnect cables for the turntable is anything else needed?
