I could spend $1400 and buy a 5th DR1 or I could spend $2000 on the XPA-7. What would you do?

If you have the room behind your sitting position, I would go with the 7.1 option.

This is exactly what I was trying to get at with my statement about room behind your seating position. If you have room to put speakers far enough behind you then go 7.1 else just go 5.1 and don't look back.

Looks like you already have 7.0 speaker set up and just need a new A/V prepro like the MC-700 along with an A700 amp.

I opted to try 7.2.4, so I put the L/R surround speakers behind the couch at couch back level and put the L/R rear surrounds on the ceiling facing a hair aft of straight down and it works very well. I can definitely distinguish the audio difference between the surround speakers and the rear surround speakers. I was skeptical at first because of the close proximity of the surrounds and rear surrounds, but it sounds very good, I am glad I tried it. I suggest you give the 7.1 a shot. Attachments:
