I wonder if I am doing something wrong. For TV sound, voices seem muffled. I am getting a center and more speakers soon, but at the moment I have Ascend 170s as L/R. My receiver is a Onkyo 686. This isnt a complaint about the speakers or receiver, rather, I think, it has something to do with the way I set them up with the TV? Or possible expecting too much from bookshelf’s for L/R sound?
When I play CDs with my UHD player, music and vocals sound good. Even streaming Bluetooth music sounds good, so that’s proof to me that the speakers and receiver are good.
Any suggestions or insight as to why I have muffled sounding voices when watching TV? Also, I should mention that I’m a cord cutter, this is through a Roku, using Hulu, Amazon, Netflix and YouTube. another detail, when I just play the above though the built in tv speaker, the voices are clear.

Is your sound source from the Tv? or your computer? Connected to the receiver via USB? Rca? Other?

Roku is connected to receiver with HDMI to a “streaming media” input on the receiver. The TV is connected to the receiver by HDMI also. The picture looks good, I have a 4K Roku and it comes through great. Other sounds sound good too, it’s just the voices that are t as clear as they should be.

As you don't have any other speakers (especially no center channel) if you have somehow set the receiver to something other than stereo, then the receiver may be sending the voices to a non-existent center channel. Switch the receiver to stereo mode when playing a video file and see if that helps.

I’m new to this, my only other experience was a home theater in a box, so it was plug and play. I’ll go into the receiver menu and see if I can figure out if that is the issue. It makes sense that it would be.

Well... I have no knowledge with that Roku thing. Maybe your setup could be more simple. On my part, my computer sound is connected to my Pt-100 preamp via USB port, my satellite receiver sound into the pt-100 via RCA and I use my tv as a computer monitor (VGA) or tv by the satellite receiver via hdmi to tv. Sound goes strait from the satellite box or computer to the pream not via the tv . And sounds good all the time no matter what I listen to.

Speaker setup, and make sure that if you are only running a left and right that the center and surrounds are set to off.
