Yes a Modi DAC will be more cost effective compared to a ERC-4 and USB to Coax adapter, you could sell the CD-100 to recoup some cost but it would still cost more, I think a Modi 3 for the laptop and CD-100 would be great, all comes down to what you want to spend haha, trust me it never ends Even though I recommended the Schiit Eitr, I have to agree on the Modi 3. I bought a Modi 3 for a friend and it's really something. I believe it also has the latest Schiit USB technology. Such a smooth sounding DAC but with a lot of up top air. $100 .... crazy inexpensive. Plus, it has three digital inputs. I have this one and absolutely love it Also this one too which i love as well, so simple and easy

Loop 7... Probably what I'm gonna do. Modi 2 or Modi 3.

Consider moving up to Modi Multibit. Of coarse, you will not be going through ERC-4 in that case

The Modi 3 was smoother to my ears than the Modi 2.

The Modi 3 was smoother to my ears than the Modi 2. Good to know. I've read the Topping D10 is another excellent sounding dac which would work really well for me. Massdrop has them for 70 shipped at this time.

I just ordered a DAC along with a matching headphone amp from Mass Drop. The DAC and headphone amp are both fully balanced, and the DAC has the latest dual ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M DAC chips. It's got all the in and outs you could want as well as a remote control. I've not heard it yet, but the reviews are all very positive, and the technical specs are really good.
