my experiment using balanced connections on Gungir mb to jolida tube preamp to XPA-200 isn’t looking good—too forward and resolution problems on cymbals etc. Things sound better on single end with upgraded audio quest cables.
two questions. A likely culprit are the cables, which are generic cables from micro center. Any reccomendations for entry level audiophile balanced cables? In the absence of any recommendations I would go with blue Jean.
second, should I even be bothering with balanced cables on this setup? I have a vague recollection that some entry level emotiva amps have balanced connectors but not fully balanced circuitry inside. Is that true of xpa 200?

Unless the terms full differential balanced or differential reference is used, which has the true balanced topology from input to output. Otherwise the balanced connection may go to summers on the input but remain differential as all Emotiva amps run differential in the amp stage as most solid state does anyway. This push pull thing. If you are getting better results using unbalanced, just use that. There is no benefit using balanced in most cases unless you are running long cable runs anyway.

XPA-200 is not fully balanced anyhow like the XPR-1, XPA-1, XPA-1L and newer XPA-DR series so if single ended sounds better I would just go with it. If you start going into high end cables that may or may not make a difference you would be spending as much of more on cables than the XPA-200 itself.

Possibly an impedance mismatch, especially with tube gear, they are commonly very sensitive to even small changes in impedance.

Just put the RCA’s back and forget it. Bill
