Im using a Sherbourn PRE-1 it has no preouts for the sub. so I am going to split the XLR outputs at the unit so I can run 2 pair of outputs in case I want to run another set of speakers or my powered subwoofer

It does split the impedance and voltage but these pres are designed to handle that.

I'm using the xbal-1X2 that dimora mentions and I'm using it for the same purpose. Its a great solution to the problem and I cannot tell that I am splitting the signal.

I would need 2 of them if I want to run an amp. I had read somewhere that it doesnt actually lower anything to any noticeable degreee. but I cant find that at the moment.
I already ordered a pair of XLR splitters so I guess I will find out soon. id hate to spend $28 on 2 boxes until I am sure if I am going to run subwoofer. I have not in a while.

When you talk about speakers you generally worry about impedance matching - because the amplifier is designed to operate with a very specific range of load impedances.
For example, if you parallel two pairs of 8 Ohm speakers, your amplifier is going to see a 4 Ohm load, which is just fine with most amps. But, if you were to parallel two pairs of 4 Ohm speakers, the result would be a 2 Ohm load, which is somewhat low for most amps to drive continuously.
However, when you talk about the outputs of devices like preamps and processors, and the inputs of amplifiers (and subwoofers), the situation is rather different. (In the old days, there were ideas about "matching the impedance for maximum energy transfer", but those are largely irrelevant with modern audio equipment.) When you talk about "how many amplifiers you could connect to one output on your preamp by using passive splitters" a more appropriate term is "fanout". And, because both the input and output impedances of preamps and amps do vary, this number will also vary. However, excluding certain really unusual models, the outputs of most modern preamps and processors can EASILY drive the inputs of AT LEAST three or four amplifiers or subwoofers via passive splitters with no issues whatsoever. (With a processor like the RMC-1, and the inputs of typical amps and subs, you would see about a 3 dB drop in level, but no other ill effects, if you were to connect as many as eight or ten such devices to each output.) the XBAL box ? is that just a passive device ? same as a cable but instead a box? I got the splitters in but didnt install them yet/
