I need to trigger an XMC-1 ON via a 12v signal. I can do so by using a 12v to power relay, but then it takes a long time for the unti to do a cold start before I can get any audio through it.
Has anyone done something like this? Ideally I'm thinking I would leave the XMC in a 'warm' state and a 12v signal could trigger IR On/Off I can't seem to find any solution that would work like that though.

I use 12v 3.5mm trigger inputs to power ON all my components which have them available, my XSP-1, XPA-2, XPA-5, Oppo 203 and Belkin PF 60 power conditioner. I use the 4 12v trigger outputs on my XMC-1 to direct what components are triggered ON and when, the XMC-1 acting as a master controller. My XMC-1 is powered ON and controlled by it rear 3.5mm IR input (front IR input is turned OFF), the XMC-1 being left in its standby state when OFF.
I use my 2 URC MX-990 remotes and URC MRF-350 RF controllers to control my system, I can then control all my 12v trigger and IR controlled components by remote without the need to ever point my remote or even be in the same room as my components, this works very well for me.

I actually have a very similar setup in general for movies, but what I'm trying to do different is turn the XMC-1 on via the button on a wall volume control so I can use it as a processor. When the power is applied to this zone 12v is sent out of the control unit, so I'm trying to leverage that. Using a URC remote with a 350rf unit is my workaround presently, but it's an extra step that I'm trying to get rid of so it 'just works' without the delay.

I'm trying to get rid of so it 'just works' without the delay. I'm not sure what you mean by this, the only way the delay could be shorter is if the XMC-1 was not turned OFF in any form at all. The XMC-1 already has two different shutdown standby modes "video Remains ON" shortest and "Lowest Power" longer. There is no shorter way to have it startup from an OFF standby other than just leaving it always ON.

AFAIK there is no trigger input on the XMC-1 so no way to leave it in standby and turn it on remotely that way. Maybe with an IR repeater and a little programming...
