I want to build a basic system for playing music in a 3000 square foot barn type out building. Nothing crazy. I just want lots of sound throughout the area. Do I need a multi channel amplifier? Or can I just hook up 10-16 speakers to a stereo amplifier? What’s the right thing to do here. $2k-$4k budget allocations in. Speakers will have to be wall or ceiling mounted. They don’t have to be in wall or in ceiling. Just compact. Thanks in advance for any help here.

What sort of coverage do you want for your 3000 sqft area? Meaning, live concert volume levels or background music level?

And, will the barn be full of people when you are playing music? Basically, give us an idea of what the space will be used for.

Not concert level. Just something above background music. It will be used when I’m working out there and for small parties.

Sweetwater is a good suggestion. Look at small public address systems for live music, or yes powered monitors. You'll want an amplifier channel per speaker you install. I'd suggest something like a couple of JBL EON612's (or three or four if you think you need more coverage) driven by the preamp of your choice.

If you don't go powered speakers, an amp like Emotiva's new BasX A400z could be a good choice of power - assuming the barn is reasonably weather-controlled (doesn't get cold and wet, especially).
I'm a big fan of Definitive Technology outdoor speakers. The AW 5500 and 6500 are very good sound quality, and their customer service is great. I have pairs of them to provide sound to my pool, my upper deck, and my master bathroom.
They are very efficient and 8 ohm speakers. They come with nice brackets, so you could mount them to the walls easily.
What kind of source do you plan to use?

If it's going to be background type of sound, you have options, daisy chain some amps, so you can control volume in some areas, or get something like a multiple amplifier, Niles or Russound....

You can get something like a Crown multiple loudspeaker (not multi channel eg 5.1) amp. Put as many decent, unpowered loudspeakers anywhere you want them and you’re good to go with one Or more sources. Bill

And don't forget the bass/sub. This is still missing in my whole house audio system and it bugs me every now and then but too lazy to install in-wall subs at the moment. I would recommend observing the retail places that you visit and see if you like how their systems sound. One of the produce stores that I frequent that has a decent sound system actually uses the Bose satellite speakers with the sub in the middle of each cluster. The resto in the golf club that I go to has Bose speakers about the size of Emotiva UOM that I have plus two subs on opposite corners of the resto which, coincidentally, has the log cabin design, probably about the square footage of your barn, about 3,000 sq ft (in the main part of the resto) with maybe a 20 feet ceiling. System sounds good. I'g go with multi-room control, maybe six zones, like this HTD system (I have been using the Lync 6 control and amps for about nine years now) plus any used Emotiva amps on the Emporium (too bad I already sold my other multi-channel amp :-)). There should also be lots of used speakers on your local buy/sell sites. Around $4K should be doable for the full system.
