Even though it's a rarity for me, I agree that it is an issue that needs fixing. Hopefully resources can be focused on getting the problem fixed, if possible. Perhaps this is a function of the processing power of the G3P that appear to be a bit underpowered based on how slow things are overall. Emotiva should know by now given the eminent release of G4P if they encountered the metallic sound issue during testing. Given the intermittent nature it may be more difficult to pinpoint but if they haven’t been able to duplicate it at all, they can state that which would mean something.

What is the surefire way with which to invoke the metallic sound? Is it just using the analog inputs and Reference Stereo?
I've encountered what I think may be this issue, but it was a long time ago and just a one time experience. So I don't know how to duplicate it.

I agree that this is one nuisance issue that we would very much like to see the back of... and we are still working on it. HOWEVER, with all this talk about other brands, I would be interested to hear how many people who've switched have actually done a proper comparison of sound quality... (And, yes, I fully understand that, for some people, having a perfect seamless user interface is a higher priority than absolute sound quality... ) I know that, in the past, many people I have spoken to have agreed that, minor technical issues aside, our processors sound audibly better than processors and receivers from many of our competitors... And I would be curious to know if that has actually changed. To those getting faux-excited about the next generation of Emotiva processors (Gen 4), read this and understand that the next gen is unlikely going to work as intended, even 5 years after release and some occasional firmware updates, which is where we are now with Gen 3 Are having quality sound and a perfect seamless user interface mutually exclusive? I certainly hope not. Just my two cents

I can get "the metallic sound" every day by using the Youttube TV app on my Apple TV. Seems to happen when switching sound modes. Notice it most of the time with 5.1 sources. I have to see how to recreate the distortion issue I had with my lumin T2 connected via Balanced Analogue in Reference stereo. Sound from all channels in a stereo mode is not as frequent but I have had this happen as well...

I have never encountered this issue with analog or Reference Stereo. Where I have encountered this is with a streaming service such as Disney+ or Hulu while going through the Apple TV 4K. 5.1 is a factor. And, my wife always hears it before I do, which means that her hearing at the high end is better than mine. I have not been able to recreate this no matter what I do. It's always random.

I heard "the metallic twanging"... in Reference Stereo mode... WITH AN ANALOG SOURCE. And, with decreased level and decreased bass. That is why I thought ‘this is very odd’. The fix was simply the mode back-and-forth switch. It happens in other modes too. It sounds like a slightly delayed version of the original signal. The metallic sound is intermittent for me.

(i got used to them but they still happen daily)
Without these "glitches" - for me the RMC-1 would be "THE" AV processor in the market soundwise, at least out of the Box. (and I had some other brands here for testing, like Acurus ACT4, Marantz (previous, not the AV model), Onkyo (TX-RZ50) and Trinnov Altitude 16.
So I really hope the G4P platform is not suffering the same issues - because then, Emotiva did not learned lessons.
And when you write "and we are still working on it", does it mean, that there is still a Firmware upgrade planned for the G3P in near future ?

1. The new upgraded processors include a new main control engine... and a lot of new firmware. 2. "Still working on it" means that we're still not sure exactly what's causing it. And, until we are, we won't know if it's a firmware issue, which we can fix, or actually something in the hardware itself. (And, if it's something like "the DAC losing lock on a not-quite-perfect signal", we may be able to work around it in firmware.) 3. And, yes, there will be at least one more firmware update for the current generation of processors. Basically, when the new firmware for the new processors is finalized, we will "roll whatever new stuff and improvements we can" back into the firmware for the current processors. While we hope to sell a lot of the new processors, not everyone needs or wants HDMI 2.1, so some people won't want or need the upgrade. And, of course, some of the units that are traded in for the upgrade will be sold as "Certified Factory Renewed" as well. I'm going to include a bit of an "editorial comment" here... regarding my personal opinion on this sort of thing. To be quite honest I don't find the occasional tick or pop to be a big deal. I find streaming to have enough flaws and weaknesses that I consider "a perfect user experience" to be pretty much a lost cause with it. (That's a tactful way of saying that "if I've reconciled myself to watching something on streaming instead of buying the disc I've already accepted that the experience will be at least a little bit annoying".) I personally find the occasional tick or pop far less annoying than trying to figure out which streaming service actually has the movie I want to watch... Or keeping track of when that movie they've been advertising for months will finally be available on one of the networks I subscribe to. And I find that true for both video and audio streaming... But, yeah, I do find even the occasional "gotta reboot everything" to be a major nuisance... But, when it comes to music, if I notice anything wrong with the sound quality, that's a deal breaker... If it doesn't sound good then I simply won't spend the time to listen to it. (This is different than background music... which I do kind of want to "just play when I hit the button" but don't pay much attention after that.) I agree that this is one nuisance issue that we would very much like to see the back of... and we are still working on it. I agree... and technically it should not be that way. Unfortunately, in the real world, there are ALWAYS going to be priorities. And, in this case, it's "how much money do we spend on performance, and how much do we spend on sound quality, and how much do we charge for our products". From my experience, with some of our competitors, they have a while tribe of engineers working on their user interface... and one old guy who works on the sound quality... in his spare time. And, since this seems to work for both them and most of their customers, I can't really say that they're wrong. And there are some that seem to have excellent sound quality, and a nice user interface, but they also have a rather impressive price tag to go along with those. Therefore, since one of our goals is to maintain a reasonable price, that our customers can actually afford, that does limit what we can spend on each of our priorities... And, since we all come from audio backgrounds, we generally choose to put sound quality at the top of that priority list... I agree that this is one nuisance issue that we would very much like to see the back of... and we are still working on it. HOWEVER, with all this talk about other brands, I would be interested to hear how many people who've switched have actually done a proper comparison of sound quality... I still think there is an issue with routing. This is not specifically a digital conversion issue. Perhaps leakage between 2.0 and 5.1 Modes, with latency differences between the 2.0 and 5.1 Modes depending on Input settings? Whether hardware or FW, who knows. I'm experimenting with the settings. I eliminated the hop-skip-jump in Atmos and DTS:X audio by Not using the Surround setting, and instead using Auto for 5.1 Mode on all HDMI sources. Using Direct Mode also eliminates the hop-skip-jump audio with Atmos and DTS:X discs. The occasional pop or tick is a small switching problem. They do not interfere within the content or performance. However, they can be loud when certain movies change formats between opening screens at the beginning of play, and when ejecting an SACD. Bottom line - I think you are suggesting we accept these function flaws because the RMC sounds good. This logic doesn't work for me. Function and sound are both foundations of a good processor. A processor is too expensive to have one without the other. Pay the price for good function, and charge what is required. You will have happier customers, and more of them. If I paid 10% more for my RMC-1L to have flawless function with the same sound and features, it will still be less expensive than most processors. Price does NOT = Value.

… I'm going to include a bit of an "editorial comment" here... regarding my personal opinion on this sort of thing. To be quite honest I don't find the occasional tick or pop to be a big deal. … While I can agree with much of what you’ve said, and maybe can ‘deal’ with the pops and clicks most of the time (though I’d rather not), many (or most?) of us don’t listen to or watch our systems alone. Often there are family or friends who look around with a WTF expression, or comment and ask ‘what was that?’. To me, just as ‘disappointing’ is when my dog gets all comfy in his spot, and then the system pops and scares him, he gets up and moves to the bedroom. He’s not going to get used to the noises, nor understand if I say ‘it just happens, don’t worry’. I know Emotiva doesn’t design systems with our pets in mind, but my point is, that whether you, or I, or anyone in the lounge gets ‘used’ to these noises, they can detract from the enjoyment for others, and might make some not want to watch, or want to own something different.

I agree with all of you that the system should have no ticks, pops, glitches, etc. And if this can be achieved that's fantastic. The pops and ticks that occasionally happen are low in volume and rare enough in my system to not bother me anymore. They don't bother my wife or family members and the kid's dogs when they are here are more bothered by the explosions and volume level. The metallic sound is the one that really bothers me. I hate having to change audio formats or back out and back in while watching something when my wife says, "Do you hear that? Can you fix it? It's annoying!" I do hope that this doesn't happen with the new processors, fingers crossed.

I know the distortion issue I had with the balanced analogue input in reference stereo shouldn't be an issue with the DAC as Analogue sources stay Analogue in reference stereo mode. Yes when everything sounds great it sounds great but when these issues happen it sounds really bad. Really seems like something with what switches the sound modes because I even powered the processor down completely (back button oiler off) and it still happened. Not until I switched modes back and forth 2 times did it go back to normal. As for streaming sources I really haven't had many issues with them. I never have distortion issues with my Lumin streamer. Never have had to reboot it because it doesn't work. It works and sounds great. Same with my YoutubeTv/Netflix/Disney Plus etc I really don't have any issues there. No drops buffering etc. This is what I expect from my av processor as well. I have far more issues with my XMC-2 than any of these. I have been lucky to not have the tick or pop issue. To me that one depends on how loud it is. If it damages your speakers it quickly becomes a big issue. Glad to hear this is being looked into but has been frustrating on a processor that I have had for 4.5 years. Little quirky interface I can handle but these issues that effect the sound are a problem

Distal source distortion issue came time to time. I use AppleTV for HDMI 1, and VRO on, seldom it sounds harsh especially with high-pitch tone “gaggled”. When netflix start sound da-da is playing, it broken. Switch to other mode like direct, dolby, stereo, back and force does not fix. Not even turn my RMC-1 off, and VRO mode kicks in, still TV sounds same. Only way to fix this problem is turn RMC-1 completely by rear switch off, wait at least 30 sec, and cold reboot again, it fixed. This problem is exist since…. I can’t recall but long time ago. I was wondering that may VRO is problem, but I can’t stop using VRO because when I am away from home, my family need to watch apple tv without turn on AV system. So VRO is vital for my side, of course I can use other HDMI to direct connection with my TV but I want as simple as VRO. My old processors and receivers such as Denon, Marantz, Onkyo and Integra, never had this issues over decades. I almost give up my hope that some time Emotive fix this eventually, perhaps, hopefully, with my figer crossed, but I am almost give up nowadays…. Such a small issue last over couple years for this Emotiva‘s flagship processor. Shame. The only reason that I still use my RMC-1 despite through all the issues since firmware 2.xx, is the HiFi grade sound quality for balanced stereo mode with Dirac. Only that. No other reason. Very, very no user friendly system, to be honest. I’ve trashed my hope since firmware 3.2. Many promises forgotten. No angry, just disappointed.

Maybe you have to see it like this - I paid 5grand and without these issues (and we have them since FW 2.x) I would be happy - it's just not as perfect as it could or should be for the requested price.
Music is no longer an issue here, as its not routed over the RMC-1. I use a highend Integrated Stereo AMP with cinema passthrough, so this is solved. Unless for some Concert Videos and MCH SACD, which I listen only sometimes, and which does always terminate with a loud POP at the end.
Stereo DSD and the rest of my music are played over a dedicated Streamer/DAC or USB DAC, same goes for my phono stage and my Tape.
my RMC-1 will turn 5 years by end of april - so its time is ticking for the G4P.

I will be a new owner of a new XMC-2 when it arrives tomorrow. I have been holding out for the new processors, but I could not pass this up with price it is currently at.
I've been running an MC1 with all BASX amps and have been very happy with the performance, which leads me to a question... Would I see a significant benefit from upgrading my front stage amp from a BASX to an XPA and its balanced connections?

XPA offers more power, and with more power you get more control over your speakers. Best is to try it out.

Depending on your speakers, I'd say yes. XPA offers more power, and with more power you get more control over your speakers. Best is to try it out. Thanks for the reply. I understand the aspects of better dynamics, headroom, etc... what I did not understand is a balanced vs unbalanced connection. I should have been clearer on that. I didn't want to miss out on any functionality by having the wrong equipment and I see that would not be the case. After a little bit of research, I see that a balanced connection (in a nutshell) is better for long cable runs which I do not have. I think I'll stay with the BASX for now. I got the XMC-2 hooked up yesterday and did a few quick test runs and it sounded great so far.
