. . . it occurs at about an hour and a half into the movie. It's never been at a chapter break. It starts to studder, then totally freezes, both video and audio. It won't fast forward or go backwards. Sometimes I can skip to the next chapter and go backwards, but when that works it still freezes at the same point. And it acts like it's in slow motion. Most of the time I have to eject the disc, get to the start menu, select the chapter beyond where the freeze occurred, go back as close to the freeze point as possible staying beyond it, and hit play. This is exactly how mine would act up. Getting through a 3 hour movie on Movie Night! was really disruptive. Just so others understand about the "overheating", it's not like the player got hot to the touch, although the disc was almost hot! The top of the unit would be rather warm but I suspect that the internals around the laser were very warm to hot. My X700 has really tiny rubber pads on the bottom that are only 1/8" tall, so the unit sits very close to whatever it's on, so the shelf mine was on would heat up along with the player exasperating the problem. Once it was raised up higher above the shelf so the shelf wasn't as active in trapping heat the problem all but went away, meaning, the player would stop playing only on the really long movies that were much longer than 2 hours. Bottom line, the X700 case is just too small to dissipate the heat. I think the first disc I'll spin in the new player will be Dune 4K. As I recall it's about 2.5 hours long, so should be a good test.

Just ordered the 420 from Amazon. It will arrive tomorrow so I can get familiar with it over the weekend! Thanks again for the advice! Chuck Keep us posted Chuck... with all the July 4th sales going on, hope it was discounted; Crutchfield has the 420 for $219 now. When I was looking for a player, I was able to pick up the 820 for $399; however, I also had $50 in Crutchfield points, so at $349 it was a no brainer for me. We watched Wonder Woman last night.... no issues at all.

I think my x800 is dead. It turns on but won’t play any discs, and says a software update is avail. Whenever I click on ok to start the update it turns off. Whether I do it over internet or downloaded to a stick, same result. When I turn it back on it shows updating but at 0% complete then after a min, it shows update failed. Guess I’m throwing it in the lake and getting a new one. I have to stick w the dang Sony though since all these others don’t play dvd-a or sacd. What’s up with that?? I’m not interested in paying $1k either.

Amazon didn't lie. The player was delivered at 6:10 am. I'm impressed and have all weekend to set it up and play!

I have a Sony UBP-X80 Blu-ray player. I bought it for the 4K capability and for SACD playback. It works fine for the most part, except when playing 4K UHD discs in BD-100 format. With virtually every one the disc plays fine until encountering the change to the third layer on the disc and then locks up. it's really annoying and takes you out of the movie. And you lose seeing part of the movie at the layer change. I'm thinking about buying a second player specifically for playing 4K UHD discs if I can find one that reliably plays BD-100 discs. Any experience or recommendations? From the research I've done on the internet it seems that all the major brands available today have at least some reports of problems playing BD-100 discs. Even the Panasonics. It appears other than Sony, the only brand that offers a "universal" player is Reavon and I can't find much in the way of reviews, specifically related to BD-100 performance. I hate to pay for a high-end unit with premium DACS when I already have that in the XMC-2. Thanks! Chuck I think “ reliable, Blu-ray player” is somewhat of an oxymoron. Eventually we all get it to work somehow, and have a set up stable and somewhat reliable with something always seems to come up… This BD – 100 layer thing is yet another that I hadn’t heard about. A player getting too hot oh man…… I haven’t gotten to 4K yet I suppose as things wear out I will be there also and deal with it at that time just before that, however, I bought a high-end Sony Blu-ray player which is just short of 4K and it was quite expensive. I have experienced the unit locking up on occasion under certain circumstances mostly when I go to streaming and change languages or something and then it just locks and I have to go unplug it. doesn’t happen too often after the last update. That being said since it’s not 4K, there are no more updates available for this player. It’s the app still get updated, but there is a little in the way of support for it. Oh well it’s just another unit that I wonder about the timeline regarding when it will be relegated to the junk pile, just like all the rest of them.

For what is worth, I got a 420 a few months ago and it has performed flawlessly so far. I have watched Top Gun Maverick a couple of times with no issues. In fact, until I run into this thread I did not even know it was a BD-100 disk 😄.

Set up the 420 this afternoon. Hope I got the settings right. I watched Ad Astra 4K and all was well. No glitches or freezing and the audio and video were great. It's a BD-66 disc, so I'll have to spin Dune later tonight to test a BD-100 disc. So far, I'm very happy.
Also set up the Harmony remote for the 420 and relegated the Sony player exclusively for SACDs.

I guess the one you want to get right is Bitstream vs PCM for the audio output, depending on where you want the format decoding to be done.

I did set it up for bitstream and the source audio was playing, so I was pretty sure I got that right. The home screen will take a bit of getting used to, just because it's different than the Sony. I didn't get around to Dune last night. Watched Jack Reacher Blu-ray with my wife instead. I hope to watch Dune tonight for a more intensive work out for the player. I'm not concerned, just a bit excited to not have to worry about glitches anymore.

The Dune trial was a success! Played all the way through on the Panny 420. Excellent video quality and the soundtrack was VERY active, especially the LFE. Totally expected, I know, and I'm a happy disc watcher!

I just checked Crutchfield for DVD /BR /4K players.
Looks like they have maybe 9 total players from 1000$ to under 100$
I'll skip the 3 sub-100$ players for 2 main reasons....both centering on quality. they are disposible. And sound quality is very suspect. Not to mention the cheapening of the product which may mean NO optic output.
A grand is out of the question...
The ONE LG Player under 200$? who knows?
Kind of cuts the field down, now doesn't it?

Reavon offers two models under the $1000 price point, but not by much.
UBR-X100 ($899) and UBR-X110($999)

UBR-X100 ($899) and UBR-X110($999) Those appear to be very nice players, but they feel like overkill when I basically only need a reliable disc spinner that supports virtually all audio codecs. I say virtually, because many don't support SACD, which I believe the Reavon 110 model now does. And the Sonys, but my experience with the X80/800 family has not been great. And no need for audiophile quality DACS when I have the XMC-2 to do the processing! I'm now a fan of the Panasonic units for best value. Chuck

Chuck Completely agree with your assessment on the Reavon players, I was just adding to "leonski's" list of players that fit his criteria. Good to hear your new 420 has solved your layer/locking problem.

A lot of 'useless' specs with the Reavon players. Who makes transport? Who makes the player? Stuff like matters.....
I started looking at the next level and many players do not have Optical output.... I don't need balanced (nice, but not necessary) and I think I own ONE disc with a SACD layer.....?
LG makes something in the mid-200s$ which is eligible. NO Sony for me!
