Since I only care about PCM sound? and have no SACD or DVDAudio or 'other'?
And being on limited finances?
MIGHT conider a PS5. I know....SONY! (gasp / choke)
But it'll play BR Very well, lacking some 'features' and much HDR support......
It's also good for most CD / DVD as well......ONLY DISADVANTAGE is NO dedicated digital auto output.
you are stuck with HDMI which means either another device OR using the single ARC HDMI input of the TV.....
But I would be replacing my aging PS3......

I’m very happy with the Panasonic 820 with one exception and it’s really not the unit itself but rather the user manual that doesn’t come with it LOL. The unit comes with something that’s little more than a pamphlet and you download the 55+ page user manual if you want it…… And I want to read everything about it. That being said, I wish they would section the manual for one section, depending on whether the thing is hooked up directly to a television set, or to a processor, the latter meaning you could take some 20 odd pages and just toss them in the trash…. so much detail invested in these adjustments that potentially you can make to the sound if it’s not hooked up to a processor. I was trying to get a handle on this thing they call “high clarity sound “ and I had to read the thing over and over again to be sure it had nothing to do with what was going on if the unit was tied directly into the processor.

I bought a SONY NEX-7 Mirrorless Camera some years ago. Minimal instructions / paper WITH it.
But an aftermarket site had ALL the manuels possible including SOMEWHERE for my camera. It was so impossibly poorly organized
that I sent them my standard offer. I'll help you FIX THIS sh** if you compensate me. We exchanged a few notes and my minor
help with their ridiculous organization was rewarded by the book in question FOR my camera.....I think they wanted 30$ for it! Evil crap.
And to top it off? i HATED that camera after a short while. Poor glass. Expensive, too! Marginal autofocus.
The few things it did well.....like pano mode.....were vastly outweighed by the stuff it did poorly.....

I totally get your frustration regarding instructions, manuals, etc. it’s the way of the industry today to provide products with almost no instructions with the assumption the end user will go online for the answers. Really not such a bad thing I’ve gotten used to it especially when I replace my cell phones they just come in a box and they tell you where to go… Online that is lol

to ME? It is a matter of 'value added'.....DO manuals add value or not?
In setting up my NIKON Mirrorless? I've been thru many videos with various 'opinions' on how to setup. Of course, there ARE a few commonalities but
you have differences depending on if you are taking nature shots or low light or doing a wedding.....
One of the FIRST things I did with my new camera? Went to Nikon and DOWNLOADED the written manual,
Network Guide? User's Manual? Reference Manual? I need to check back for UPDATES since the Firmware is now up to Rev 3.60 which means I'm LATE.......
Sometimes the docs change to reflect UPdates to firmware.....Autofocus is now vastly different than original......
My SONY frustration was with the camera, not the docs. And that awful menu organization.....

Sometimes you need to watch a bunch of them to get a sense for who knows what the heck they’re talking about and who doesn’t but when you hit pay dirt, it’s a revelation. I love it for everything from fixing something strange on the car to making the perfect hard boiled egg to get the shell to come off without cursing and screaming.

Absolutely:
Just like an audio review. Who is as important as anything else.
I've gone thru bunches of reviews / 'helps' and would like to take a stab at it myself. I'd specialize in 'Idiots Guide' level vids.......A One-Point lesson.......

FYI - various places are selling the 820 for $350 and the 420 for $200; apparently early Blackfriday pricing.

So I’m living with my new Blu-ray player combination which is the Panasonic 820 and the other is my SONY UHPH1.
I always maintain two players in my system for a number of reasons, one being I can never seem to get everything I’m looking for in one package And that’s OK. sometimes I pop in a disk and it gets funky in one player and then you take it out and put in the other player and it goes fine so who knows. that’s one of the reasons as far as features go, my Sony has something that I was hoping the Panasonic would have and it doesn’t and that’s Bluetooth. I really enjoy having that so I can pair my remote speaker or my headphones and play something at night with everything else shut off and that’s very cool. I’m enjoying the 820 but it’s no great shakes. The menus aren’t very good for the apps in particular, but it plays better than my Samsung that I took out of commission since they don’t support it anymore. And I don’t have the hazard any longer of the player shutting onto a disc and scratching it which was a weird thing that was happening with the Samsung.

Bought the Panny. Last player I ever hope to need or buy. I'll slip it in where the PS3 is now.....and get 10$ for the PS3 after I 'format' and delete most information from the HD. I've got some games which MAY be useful so I'll see......
I went to Local Best. They HAD ONE. But as I was getting to checkout? Box had a BIG ding in it going right to the player. So I went to a help and they found ONE more store with the Player......so I ended up in Encinitas where they had TWO of 'em......
Never considered the Sony......But would have like to check out the LG......

PS3 sold.....with 3 of the games. 6 games to local game store....NOT Gamestop PS3 needs a new controller.....cheap online at about 14$ or so each....buy 'em in pairs.
Just pocket change, really, but MY pocket!
the '820 now up and running.....playing the BR version of HUGO. Good movie and wonderful, detailed sets and backgrounds. Not to mention Sasha Baron Cohen as 'the inspector'..... My setup is PCM......this is stereo for those who live in Peoria.....No tricky stuff....
Took this opportunity to clean / dust / oil THAT section of the TV table......Filthy dust collector, at best.....

Ok, I'm ABOUT to give up.....Put in a CD, went to the audio selector and pressed play. TV CAME ON.
Doesn't appear to be 'AUDIO ONLY' setup......with NO HDMI.....Am I going to have to UNPLUG the HDMI to use this as a CD player?
Made sure the PCM only was selected where it asked. TV connected to HDMI / with audio and video. I do NOT want to put my
CD auto 'thru' the TV. Another step is certainly bad......
I'm going to send off to Panasonic and hope for the best......
I've been reading thru the manual and NO simple way to 'shut off' HDMI so you can use PCM Optical.......Really?

Yes.....ttocs......I saw that. But I think the problem MAY be the CEC link with the TV.
I went into my TV setups and simply turned CEC to the OFF position. I'll try again later, after I listen to another disc.
But for an emergency work-around? I simply UNPLUGGED the HDMI cable at the TV end.......
I'm not sure that disabling the audio from the HDMI would be 'it', either...since I may want to watch a MOVIE......
Nope.....FINGERS CROSSED that the CEC 'fix' is a good one!
wish me non-psychotic luck!

I had the same situation with my 420, I was able to fix it, but right now can't remember how...
I have one HDMI output going directly to the LG OLED TV and the other to the Fusion 8100 for audio only, though.
I'll see if I can trace back what I did.

Seems FIXED. I went to the new TV.....and shut off the CEC in THAT setup......shut everthing down and turned ON the Panny. Success. than I popped in a CD and turned on the PRE.......MUSIC.......

My setup is different:: than Mr MusicHead....
Small dish to TV....I think the ARC HDMI input. Optical to 4-input / 1 output switch new BlueRay Player...the Panny.....HDMI to TV and optical to the switch 3rd HDMI input from a cable which CAN be attached to CAMERA. I can show stills or video on the TV directly from the camera.....MINI HDMI (type C) to whatever the regular HDMI end is called.....
Optical switch OUTPUT to my preamp, a nice 2.1 type WITH a reasonable DAC......
Using optical totally prevents ANY chance of electrical ground loops by that means.....
