Hi, quick question.. I wanted to throw it out there as it's been going around in my head for a while. I own an Oppo DV-981HD DVD player and a Panasonic DMP-BD60K. I love both of them in their own way (Although I wished i'd dropped the extra money for the Oppo Blu). Both are in the same rack supporting the same room. I don't have a need for a separate player in a different room (tried that and didn't use it). All my rentals these days are blu-ray so the Panny gets some good air time. Ocassionally I'll use the Oppo for CD listening. The question is really does anyone use both? Is there a reason to keep the Oppo around? I really don't notice any SQ difference on CDs; but I just like the fact the Oppo has never failed and looks good Is there a place for both? Or should I get rid of the Oppo??? It's a tough choice!!!

Well, you can predict getting that answer here because the Oppo 83 is treated like the second coming in this forum. It's the honorary Emo blu-ray. But unlike any Emo product, the 83 is one of the more expensive players on the market. I recently added the Panasonic BD60 to my stack for a scant $160. For SACD I've already got a Marantz 7600 that does quite well. The Oppo may be better, but I doubt it's $340 better. You didn't ask about the 83, but I'm just saying, don't give in to buyers remorse and do anything drastic.
As for your question, I would do one test. Get out your favorite DVD or two play a couple of good scenes on each player. (especially ones with fast motion and lots of detail) If the Oppo edges out the Panny in picture quality on standard DVD, then keep it plugged in. If there is no difference or if the Panny is better, then I'd put it away. You could probably get around $100 for it on ebay if that's worth the hassle to you, or you could make it a Christmas present for someone who hasn't made the jump to blu-ray yet. (that's what I usually end up doing)

Unless you listen to SACD there is really little reason to keep the Oppo 981. The Panasonic Blu will do everything else. As a side note, this past week I have read two reviews that said the Oppo BD83 and the Panasonic BD-80 tied in picture quality... everything else they ranked was a step lower in PQ.
Consumer Reports looked at several of the latest BluRay players and the Oppo and the Panny tied for all-around performance. The two were equal in most aspects, with each having the upper hand in specific areas. I was expecting the Oppo to win the top spot going away from the pack, but they rated the two dead even. (Not that Consumer Reports is noted for its A/V expertise.)
Just thought it was an interesting review, especially for those who don't need SACD or on a tight budget. I have seen the Panny 80 for as low as $195 shipped. The $300 price difference played a role in them receiving the same total score, I am sure. Hmm, makes one pause for a closer look at the Panny.

But unlike any Emo product, the 83 is one of the more expensive players on the market. I recently added the Panasonic BD60 to my stack for a scant $160. I find this statement rather condescending of members of this forum who have praised the Oppo 83. The Oppo BDP-83 is raved about at every forum I have visited. I for one own the Oppo 83. It is not perfect but it is the best BD player on the market regardlless of price. I would not call it expensive in any way considering that it includes an excellent SACD/DVD-Audio section as well as the best Blu-Ray and standard DVD playback on the market all for $499. There are many Blu-Ray players that are many multiples more expensive than the Oppo 83. As far as Panasonic, I have tested out both the Panny 35 and the Panny 605 (Costco model which is identical to the 60). I always recommend the Panny 60 and 80 to anyone lookng for the best BD player in the $200-$300 range. BTW, the BD60 has only dropped below $200 recently. It's definitely a best buy and superior to competing units from Sony and Samdung in its pirce range. However it is not quite the equal to the Oppo player in my opinion. The difference in PQ is very slight but the Oppo has a number of other advantages in build quality, super OSD, owner's manual originaly written in English and extremely clear, customer service and excellent multi-channel playback. Here are some reviews on the Oppo BD 83 if you think only Emo forum members think it is the second coming. BTW, how much did you pay total for the Panny 65 and the Marantz 7600 (list price $899) together? More than $499? ;D My previous post: "The Oppo BDP-83 truly is the ultimate Blu-ray player" (UltimateAVmag.com) Today the September issue of Home Theater Magazine arrived with yet another rave review of the Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-Ray player. Those interested in buying the Oppo 83 and those who already own it, might be interested in having all the reviews in one thread. I'll add more reviews as they become available. My post at another forum: Oppo BDP-83 vs Panny DMP-BD-605, Video Test I helped a friend pick out his new Blu-Ray player at Costco, a Panasonic DMP-BD605 ($250) and he said I could borrow it for a test (this is the same as the Panny BD60). I've had my new Oppo BDP-83 ($499) universal player for two weeks (early adoption program) and I was curious to compare the two in video picture quality. I rented several Blu-Ray movies that I already owned so that I would have a duplicate copy to compare side by side. I also had a SD DVD copy of each. Master and Commander, Blu-Ray and DVD Kung Fu Panda, Blu-Ray and DVD I hooked each player up to my Panasonic TH-C50FD18, 1080p, Panny plasma via HDMI, with 1080p/24 output and all settings at neutral. I did not have the time to do an audio comparison or the help to do a blind test. My Panny takes about 5 seconds to switch between HDMI inputs so I cued up the players about 10 seconds apart. This allowed me to compare the same 5 second clip for PQ. I started both movies and made numerous 5 second checks. I looked for minute details such as facial close ups and very fine scene details. This was much harder than it might sound. Finding suitable scenes that stay consistent for 5 seconds and have lots of detail for a close comparison of definition and clarity was tiring and took intense concentration. First let me comment that the build quality and appearance of the Oppo were several steps above the Panny. However, I actually preferred the clear markings on the Panny remote. The Opp looked like 1 2 3 ON OFF < > ENTER instead of like this on the Panny 1 2 3 ON OFF < > ENTER. The manual and ODS menu's were very nice on the Opp. Load times were a strength of the Oppo. I put a disc in the tray and then hit play. I would start the stopwatch when the tray was completely closed and then stop it when I saw script or a picture on the screen, the same for each player. Master and Commander, Blu-Ray ... Oppo 29 sec. Panny 65 sec. Master and Commander, SD DVD ... Oppo 12 sec. Panny 19 sec. Kung Fu Panda, Blu-Ray ... Oppo 24 sec. Panny 56 sec. Kung Fu Panda, SD DVD ... Oppo 17 sec. Panny 24 sec. Chapter Changes, average ... Oppo 2 sec. Panny 3.5 sec. After I finished comparing the two players with identical Blu-Ray discs, I loaded the Blu-Ray version in one player and the SD DVD version in the other and then visa versa. This allowed me to see how much difference there was between the BD and DVD discs and compare the relative upconversion performance of each player. There was less difference when the Oppo was playing the SD DVD and the Panny was playing the Blu-Ray than the other way around. My conclusions were that the Oppo had the better PQ in both Blu-Ray and SD DVD's. However, I must emphasize that the difference especially in the Blu-Ray playback was very slight and subtle. I had to strain to see the differences which were always in favor of the Oppo. The upconversion of the Oppo was slightly more apparent but again quite subtle. I would say the Oppo was a hair better in Blu-Ray and two or three hairs better in SD DVD. What if I left the room and had a friend load a Blu-Ray disc in one of the players and then returned. Would I be able to tell which player was which? Probably not. I would have a better chance if it was an SD DVD. The Panasonic seems like an excellent player for the price. The Oppo during my two weeks with it seems to be an outstanding player both in video and audio. I have found several audio glitches which I presume will be fixed in future firmware upgrades. (BTW, the glitches were all fixed in the first firmware upgrade before the player was released to the general public) The Oppo DMP-BD83 is definitely a keeper for me.

A good reason to keep the Oppo around is for when you do watch Standard DVD. Like you said, that may be rare these days. I think the best advice would be to do as tchaik said and sell both to obtain the BD83. It will do everything for you and take up less rack space. That will give you a reason to purchase new gear and fill the empty spot ;D ;D

I read my post after posting it and thought, "That might open a can of worms." Let me back-peddle just a little. I'm not surprised that the Oppo 83 is praised in other A/V forums. But I don't tend to troll those forums, just this one. Because everyone gets along here so much better. The 83 is the best player out there. It blows away most cheaper mass-market players like Sony's and LG's, and meets or exceeds more specialty brands like Denon or Lexicon that cost much more. It's analog section is equivalent to a much more expensive dedicated machine. But for me, 500 bucks it just too much for a blu-ray player, no matter how good it is. Based on how much money I make, how much of that I'm willing to put into this hobby, and how badly I want a blu-ray player, what my options are, and where my comfort point is along the curve of diminishing returns, that is just not going to happen. If the price comes down in the future then I will recalculate, because it is a very nice player. We all shop in different market segments, and the Oppo is not in my segment right now. But the Panny is, and it's the best in it's segment. (It would be nice if it had Netflix streaming like the Samsungs and LG's, but it's not worth trading off PQ.) To restate my point to the original poster: If you are in the same market segment as me (and I'm inferring that you might be since we have the same blu-ray player), don't let peer pressure push you into a higher segment than you're comfortable with. Unless analog performance (SACD especially) is a top requirement for you, then the gains are small compared to the increase in price. On the other hand, if analog is important and $499 for a player is no big deal to you, then yeah, you definitely should have gone with the Oppo. BTW, I got my Marantz 7600 for only $100 on Ebay. That doesn't seem to be an uncommon price there, either. Talk about depreciation!

I'm keeping both of mine for now because together they do it all and really don't take all that much room, just an extra set of cables and inputs... This addiction, ooppss, I mean hobby, ;D is a bottomless never ending pit. I just need one more piece of equipment!!!! ;D

I have a BD35 and Oppo 980. I'll probably keep them both until Oppo comes out with a 'budget' blu ray player....

I have a "Panny" BD55 which was the predecessor to the current BD80 model, so along with looks and similar feature set, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the two. I ALSO have the Oppo BDP83 and I would concur with many of the comparisons listed so far. The upscaling of standard DVD's in the Oppo is superior to the Panasonic BUT Blu-Ray performance is very close. The feature set and load times are superior on the Oppo.
One thing that has always been the deal breaker for me with the Oppo product is their after market service and while the mainstream companies fight to constantly bring out new generations of players, Oppo is constantly improving on their existing player and providing upgrades to handle any future issues especially as new discs come on the scene that older players might have a problem with.

This comparison is relatively simple. If you need the SACD & DVD-A ability go with the Oppo BDP-83. If you don't need those two capabilities then the Panasonic DMP-BD80 is the Oppo's equal in every other category. I personally demoed them both at the same time and came away with them both being top performers in video and their performance in decoding DolbyTrueHD & DTS-HD/MA through the 7.1 analog outputs. I personally didn't need the SACD & DVD-A capabilities so it was a no brainer for me to save $300. Amazon has the Panasonic DMP-BD80 going for $199 and the DMP-BD60 for $159.

I went with the new Oppo to consolidate because I need SACD and DVD-A. If you don't need those, and you're happy with the Panny's CD and DVD playback, I'd just go with that. I do think the Oppo BDP does a better job of DVD playback, but that's compared to the BD35, not the BD60.

Thanks guys... lots of healthy conversation! I do currently own the DMP60 and the Oppo 981 DVD... I think based on people thoughts keep both and run some tests. I'm sort of attached to my Oppo I'm definitely not in the market for the Oppo BD; I'm very happy with the DMP60 and for $300 cheaper it does everything I need out of the player (I don't own any SACD or DVD-As).

Though you may not run alot of DVDs I would take one out of your collection and test on both units to see if can notice a difference, if you dont, probably could get rid of the oppo.

Good reading...I am looking to get into Blu Ray and don't need the SACD or DVA-A features (already have a Denon that will stay connected to the HT).
For my use, I will be connecting the BD player to a UMC-1 (if that give you an idea of my timing) and letting the UMC-1 do the decoding on audio and video (unless someone thinks that's not a good idea...).
It looks like the Panny BD80 is highly thought of by various forum members. Any thoughts on the Sony line in the $170-$270 range or the same price level Phillips?
Thanks for any advice.

Here it is Cyber Monday, and I was all psyched to get a deal on a BD80 - but I see Amazon jacked their price to $360!!! It was a lot lower last month as LCS notes, then jumped up last week to $250. I thought it would go back down today...I guess not!
So, here I am with a $100 gift certificate to Amazon.com that I need to use. The Panny BD60 is on sale for $109...I am leaning to getting it...$10 out of my pocket. What the hell - why not? I can get an Oppo or whatever later if I want.
One question: if you were going to buy an inexpensive BluRay player NOW from Amazon, is there one one you would buy over a BD60? (Note: I specifically list Amazon as that is the only place my gift certificate is good for...)

Go for the DMP-BD60, since your going to have a UMC-1 soon you won't need the decoders that the DMP-BD80 has. I believe the only difference is the decoders. As for the DMP-BD80 going up, it's being phased out so the old supply and demand thing is coming into play.
