Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but I'm just getting into the lopop after 25+ years. My ERC-1 is on the way. Am I correct that it has a a pretty good built-in DAC, or would I be better with a separate unit like a Dac Magic or /Music Hall DAC 25.2 ? If a separate unit is used, should it be connected via the EMO's diigital outputs ? Thanks.

If I were you I would listen to it when you get it, and if needed, borrow and compare it with other DACs. No sense in spending money on something if the one you haven't heard yet sounds just as good. In the case with other components of Emo gear, particular the build-in phono stages, some aspects have equaled or exceeded the performance of external stages costing 3x the price of the whole preamp.

If you were to use an external DAC then, yes, you would use the digital output on the ERC to connect to the DAC. But the DAC in the ERC is very good and connecting an external DAC like the DacMagic or Music Hall 25.2 would just be redundant.

There is no need for a separate DAC when using the ERC-1. It has a great performing DAC and is designed to be used with the analog outs. Your listening tastes, preferences, and system may enjoy the sound of a different DAC connected to it. I would do as others have suggested and listen to the unit by itself and decide if you like it. If possible, borrow a DAC and compare. I own both the ERC-1 and the Music Hall DAC. Here is the thread where I did a comparison of the two if your interested. emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=media&action=display&thread=5774
