any time I see rear firing ports I can't help but think about placement issues/problems....
I just realized, that sounded pretty funny...in a "Family Guy" kind of way..

Actually those are the two subs I am looking at to get for the MMGs. But the Martin Logan Dynamo sub I was looking at does not have ports. I don't want a sub with ports. I like the tight bass of a sealed sub. What is drawing me to the Polks is the automatic adjustment feature it has using the mic. Also the two are about the same price. Any other opinions, I do appreciate everyones help. Thanks, John

It has some pre set selections for basic sub placements that I tried first...corner, mid wall, middle of room, etc. Those made noticable changes in how the sub sounded. I then ran the auto setup process with the included mic...and I liked what that did.

Well, I passed up on the Impact Mini deal since I was hesitant that it wouldn't be an upgrade in SQ over my Aperion S8-APR.
Instead, I snagged a Velodyne VMS-8 from Amazon (HiDef Lifestyle) for $350.
The VMS-8 is the same sub as the MiniVee and the Chrysalis Photon-8, just different cabinet/looks. All other specs are identical - which makes the VMS-8 a steal for $350.
While I think the Aperion can at least match the Velo in overall output (up in the 50-60Hz region...since the Aperion starts rolling off in the low 40's in my room), the SQ of the VMS-8 is definitely a step up. Not that the Aperion was bad - far from it...it was a nice punchy sub - but the VMS-8 is tighter and cleaner, and can truly handle a rapid double bass line. I also suspect the Velo goes deeper (and it should based on specs), although I haven't confirmed this with an SPL meter.
I'm extremely happy with the SQ of this sub for $350. It's also very compact, which makes it great for my office PC setup in my 11x13 room. It has more output than I need in my small room, and only have the gain a little past 10 o'clock.
Anyone looking for a small sub for music only, in a small to medium sized room, I am confident to recommend it.

For a subwoofer to be used with Magnepans the Rythmik Audio offerings should be considered. For integration with Magneplanar a sealed subwoofer with a relatively light driver cone, low Q, and servo control stands a good chance of keeping up.

Sunfire HRS- 8 or 10 would suite your needs rather nicely.

I like the finish and at $224 shipped, it's great value vs performance. For $350, I'd wait for Emo's Ultra 10. I could use the extra time to save up some more dough.
