Good comedy/drama about murder in a small Texas town. Jack Black gives a good performance. Based on a true story. 4/5 stars.

50/50 - 2011 Based on a true story. It is a nice movie and not one that I would normally watch but I did enjoy it. Nicely cast.

We watched "Journey To Fearless" (A Taylor Swift concert from her 2009 tour) last night on Blu-ray. I've always been a huge Taylor Swift fan, and think she's even today a highly underrated songwriter and singer, (your mileage may vary! ). This Blu-ray is just what it says: "Journey to...", in other words, its not a pure concert Blu-ray, but includes much of the behind the scenes preparation, planning, and some of Swift's early career. (But seriously, can you REALLY have an "early" career at age 20?!). All this leading up to her huge 2009, nearly year and a half long major production tour. I generally thought the production was excellent throughout, but many of the songs presented are interrupted with background commentary - I'd have preferred they just let each song play through straight with no interruptions, and cover that stuff BETWEEN the numbers. Also (like all of Paul McCartney's concert videos), there are FAR TOO many of what I call "adoring fan shots". A few? Okay. This many? No. I don't want to make it sound like I didn't like this one, as some songs played all the way through, and the production values are very high on this concert Blu-ray. Okay, onto my specific ratings: Concert quality/interest as presented: 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. See above for specific complaints & compliments... Video quality: 4.5 out of 5 stars, (Aspect ratio 1.85:1, presented in 1080i, but your Blu-ray player will up convert it to 1080p). The video is excellent throughout, a bit of camera focus delay on some scenes, but typically 'razor-sharp' everywhere. Colors are great, and camera angles are good too. Audio quality: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars, (DTS HD Master Audio 5.1). An excellent audio track. Dynamic and uncompressed (unlike her CDs! ). Clear, 'up front', well recorded. Surprisingly not much use of the surrounds except for audience effects. I guess that's a director's choice... Overall rating – 4.0 out of 5.0 stars. Recommended as a very enjoyable concert Blu-ray showcasing some tremendously talented songwriting, but you'll have to out up with some of the other stuff (mentioned above) to get there. Another very worthwhile way to spend 2 hours and 15 minutes! Attachments:

Let us know how you like the 'setting up' of your new BDP-103, because I've heard its considerably different than for their BDP-93!

I had it up and running in under 10 min. It defaults to standard settings that most people would use. AUTO detection for speakers, HDTV resolution, HDMI, etc. It took me longer to LOGIN to Netflix than anything else. It auto updated the second I turned it on, too. Very slick and solid design. Sound is quite good...I tried SACD (88.2) and some DVD-A (96) and the AIX sampler with Dolby Tru HD. This player has the fastest loading time of any I have reviewed. I'm thinking Roku stick in the MHL port, but I may hold off and see if Hulu+ will be added later...making the stick superfluous. Bourne Legacy looked very good. I will hook the HDMI directly to my DLP this weekend and see if a direct route (instead of via the UMC-1) makes any appreciable video improvement. The front panel is very clean and compliments my other gear. Well done, Oppo!
Overall, I am very pleased with the purchase and look forward to years of enjoyment with this player which replaces my SonyBD S570 and Oppo 980H. One player to rule them all...

We watched "Marvel's The Avengers" in 3D Blu-ray last Saturday night. (Based on the comic book characters of course!). I'd never seen a 3D movie before on my 3D Panny plasma, and wasn't expecting to be thrilled - but 3D on a flat panel was **MUCH** better than I was expecting! Okay yeah, the movie is horrible bubble gum fare (borrowed from a friend who likes such 'things'), but the 3D effect was excellent and retained the astounding detail and resolution of 2D, but with convincing depth in nearly all scenes. Panasonic's 3D active shutter glasses were surprisingly comfortable, and fit over our regular glasses without problems. There was a bit of eye adjustment but not too bad if you don't move your head around too much, otherwise eye strain was evident. Another thing, these 3D glasses maintained an excellent connection well up to 16 feet away, (we specifically experimented with that because I'd heard they wouldn't work past 10 feet or so, but these sure did!). This 3D Blu-ray was my first, (I was a 3D virgin' before, so I feel a bit dirty & used now - but in a good way! ). The movie's story was typical super hero stuff - about as deep as a puddle two days after a rain, and with a plot about as predictable as the temperature inside of your refrigerator! - but it was fun nonetheless. This movie was made just to kick back for a couple hours, decouple your brain, and enjoy! Okay, onto my specific ratings: Movie story quality/interest as presented: 2.5 out of 5.0 stars. See above for specific comments,...don't expect a lot here,... Video quality: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars, (Aspect ratio 1.85:1, presented in 3D 1080p). The 3D video effect is excellent throughout and 'razor-sharp' everywhere. Colors are great, and camera angles are good too. Audio quality: 4.5 out of 5.0 stars, (DTS HD Master Audio 7.1). An excellent audio track, but oddly lacking in low bass. Dynamic and uncompressed otherwise, with clear dialog & well recorded. Overall rating – 3.5 out of 5.0 stars. Recommended as a very enjoyable 'popcorn' 3D Blu-ray movie (clearly aimed at 'the older children' among us!). Another very worthwhile way to spend (about) 2 hours and 20 minutes, (I gave it back before recording the exact time, I know it was over 2 hours, but less than 2 1/2 hours long). Attachments:

Just saw MIB 3. I didn't care for the first 2, but this one was pretty good all around.

Ride With The Devil - 1999 This is a good yet gritty civil war film with a focus on a guerrilla team fighting the Federalists seeking revenge on family member murders. I really enjoy a story like this as it is complex but the bonds made in tough times appeal to my sense of right. Jewel was really good here as was the whole cast. I had not seen this before. So many movies so little time but glad I caught this one.

Say the avengers recently too. Tons of fun but it lost a little watching it in the 2d version. Even though it was a 2d conversion I remember that they had done it very well.

Janie Jones - 2011 This was a beautifully acted and very real type of movie. The movie is loosely based on Rosenthan real life of meeting his daughter when he was 30 and she 11. She co-directed on this film.

>> Marvel's The Avengers <<
This is one of the best comicbook-come-to-life movies out there. My two favorite scenes are the ones where the Hulk sucker-punches Thor (heh, heh) and again when Capt. America commands: "Hulk - smash!" I bet the 3D effects were awe inspiring, especially in the climactic downtown battle scenes...

The one thing that bothered me about "Unstoppable" was their ability to chase the train using a helicopter at very low flight levels. If they could get so close to the train, why didn't they simply drop a coupla guys onto the train and then stop it?
And the train almost flipping over around that tight curve looked really hokey - CGI at its worst.
And let's not even go there with "Battleship". That movie was a *total* POS. If you're a big "Tansformers" fan it might have been watchable, but otherwise, meh. Liam Neeson should be ashamed of himself...
