Well folks... everything has been going swell with my new UMC-1 ,XPA-5 and Oppo until this evening. All of a sudden, the UMC will sort of turn on then off and never shows anything on the front display panel. The power button goes amber but the blue lights stay on the rest of the unit.
I've unplugged it for a short period and then for 2 hours and still only a partial response.
The manual calls for a reset but I'm not sure if that is something different than an unplugging.
Does anyone know how to reset the UMC-1 or have any other ideas for me?
This is really frustrating!!!
Thanks for the help.

This is from the manual of the UMC's twin sister Pre/pro:
Important – Please note the (pre/pro) requires initialization after the power cord is plugged into the line cord receptacle. Push and hold the power button for approx. 5 seconds. The unit will power up after this small delay. The second push of the power button will turn the unit off and after this the unit will turn on and off in a normal fashion.
I've never had to do this with the UMC, but it's worth a try.

Oh boy. For your sake I hope you are not in the same boat as I am. My UMC-1 did the same thing 5 days ago. It is still dead. It will not power up - just sits there displaying "Loading . . . ." and then the standby button goes amber but the volume and nav buttons remain blue. This cycle repeats a few times and then it remains at the "Loading . . . . " stage indefinitely.
Emotiva advised me to reload the firmware. I tried that several times without success - it seems to complete the first of the two tasks (the UMC1_V102_001 file), and then it power cycles a few times, and then stops with the message "Send reset 0 command no resonse!" displayed at the bottom of the Emotiva Updater. Emotiva has told me that the firmware upload process must be done with the computer booted in Safe Mode so I tried that tonight but no luck. If anyone can offer any more tips on getting the firmware upload to complete, I'd like to hear them.
Regarding the "reset" procedure - as you noted, the ONLY reference to reset in the entire manual is in the troubleshooting section it says "Unplug AC power momentarily, and press Power to turn back on. If this does not work, try the reset procedure. " That's it - unfortunately, the manual is still incomplete.

Thanks for the idea... but I've tried the long 5 second start but there's no change.
Hopefully there's another reset that someone can help with.

My UMC-1 has been fairly stable, until last night. It crashed and upon re-powering, the UMC began to cycle on and off until it crashed after a few cycles. While it was cycling it buzzed and hummed from within the chassis, not through the speakers. No amount of pulling the mains, or shutting the rocker switch on the back seemed to help. After a while I noticed my power conditioner/voltage regulator reporting very low voltage!. I replugged the UMC into a separate outlet and it rebooted and all was well again. I trust the unit survived the brownout, it is sounding and behaving as it was prior to the event.
Perhaps those units that are recycling are suffering from low voltage?
Let me tell you the UMC does not sing sweetly from within the chassis, more like a groaning..., not like a songbird. Lonnie can you re-voice my unit if I sent it back?

Wonder if anyone has tried the update on a Mac with Parallels running Windows... I installed the first FW update with a Mac running VM Ware fusion. I also reloaded it with a Mac running Bootcamp. I was running XP , by the way.

Thought I'd throw an update on the Board regarding my reset problem. The unit's power button still cycles on and off while the rest of the lights remain blue. I was watching the 2nd Transformers in Blu Ray on Thursday night, turned everything off as normal and then on Friday, voila... this happens.
So, as I try to figure out how to re-load the firmware, does anyone know how to perform a hard reset as it says on Page 38 under "UMC locks up"?
Mucho thanks...

If you have no luck over the weekend from other members here, I suggest you give Emotiva Tech Support a call Monday morning. They'll take care of you and get it sorted out.

Let me first say that I am not certain what is meant by the "reset procedure" in the manual, but if you have power cycled the rocker switch on the back (leaving it off for about a minute) then you should have reset the processors. Can you get to the on-screen menu? If so, try returning the software to "factory default" then return the unit to standby (press the front power button and wait for it go go yellow.) Then try again to apply the firmware update. When I installed the first update release, it took three tries for it to load. (I assume you've loaded the USB driver in your PC?)

Well folks... I managed to borrow no less than 2 Laptops and I ran the firmware update about a thousand times! When it finally connected and updated the firmware, the updater went all the way to 99.9% and then the following statement appeared... "send"reset 0" command no response.
I'm completely stumped. Any suggestions?
Thanks again.

I printed out the directions and followed them meticulously, checking off each step as I proceeded. Using a laptop running Windows Vista I turned off my Anti-virus, Anti-malware, screen saver and exited all other programs. Then following the directions (including leaving it alone when it was updating!) it worked first time! I really was surprised and was prepared to boot up in safe mode if it had failed. Anyhow, I hope this helps in some way, although YMMV.
Safe mode might be a good option to try dogbox..

I'm not sure what "safe mode" is... Can you elaborate?

I'm not sure which operating system you're running but in general the steps below would apply:
1 If the system is already turned off, power it on. 2 If the system is already on, shutdown the system normally, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on. 3 Begin tapping the F8 key every few seconds as the system boots up until the screen offering the Safe Mode option appears. 4 Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key. 5 The system will now boot into Safe Mode. 6 On Windows XP, you may receive a prompt asking if you really want to boot into Safe Mode. Choose Yes.
Notes: - If tapping F8 did not result in the Safe Mode option being offered, repeat the steps 1 to 4 above.
- After the upgrade is over, simply shutdown the computer and boot up as normal (i.e. not in safe mode). So just follow steps 1 and 2 above.
Booting in safe mode means only the bare minimum processes and services on your computer will be running (i.e. just those that are actually needed to run the computer and no more). This eliminates the chances of something influencing and interfering with the upgrade process.

Get the unit replaced! You've gone above and beyond the call of what a consumer should have to do, to get a piece of electronic gear to work.
