I unpacked and hooked up my UMC-1. The unit is well packed for shipping.
The standard remote that comes with the unit is not of very high quality. It is cheap looking, plasticy, small buttons with hard to read labels in dim light.
The front panel looks very good, sturdy and well made. I love the lighting and the informative display channel. The chassis cover could be a bit higher gauge, it feels a little thin. I did not open the unit for inspection for fear it would void some warranty. I would of liked to inspect the components to see if they are actual high grade components or just off the shelf quality.
I wished that the stereo audio jacks for the component video inputs were located directly above them. That would be a better physical location. For example, I have a Wii and a PS2 that I want to connect to the UMC-1. Their component video cables has 5 connectors, 3 for video and 2 for audio. The audio cables are too short to reach the audio input jacks.
The HDMI audio pass thru is works great. This eliminated having to use separate audio cables. I was a little concerned with my DiVCo M6500-A multimedia player, but it worked fine with the UMC-1. ( My next major objective is to replace the DiVCo with the Dune Prime multimedia player.)
Some bothersome issues... I wish that the video and audio source switching would be faster.
Switching between channels on my Dish satellite receiver causes the sound to drop out for a second or two while the UMC-1 figures out the audio type. The picture is there, but no audio for a second or two. Sort of irritating. Haven't figured out if there is a way to turn this feature off.
Switching between HDMI inputs; it isn't quite fast enough because A/V detection is slow. During the time there is no sound and no video. So even if my Oppo BluRay player is turned on ready to go, switching from my Dish receiver to the Oppo causes a second or two of no audio, no video.
Video pass thru gives the best picture, although the pass thru isn't 100% passive so there is a tiny bit of distortion. Not sure what it is... the picture looks good, but a tiny bit different versus directly plugging the HDMI into the HDTV. I'll have to figure out how to describe it. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's not a 100% pure pass thru either.
1080p sources look the best. My Oppo Bluray player performs well as well as my Dvico M6500-A unit. Color quality is excellent, no loss of information going thru the UMC-1. Audio quality is pretty good. Soundstage depth and width are preserved. Details are still there. I don't hear any compression going on. Now I'm interested in getting the 5 channel amp.
There is a bit of a warm up time. I call it burn-in and whether you believe it or not, the unit is much more pleasing to the eye and ears after 20 mins of warm up.
