I have an old ADCOM GTP-500 preamp that's been dying for some time. I've been hanging on trying to wait for the XSP-1, but it just don't seem to be coming. It’s been talked about being available since Christmas of 2009. I'm going in for hip replacement surgery and will have lots and lots of time to listen to music, I'd love to have a decent preamp (with a remote control).
I'm thinking about giving in and getting the USP-1, but I just wonder what I'll be missing with the XSP-1. I know the XSP-1 will be fully differential, less noise, lacks tone controls, but do we know anything else about it???
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Best Regards, Stan

I'm right there with you man, its been very very tough to hold out... actually the thing that has kept me going is all the"problems" with the USP... I want to tell you it won't be too much longer, but since there has been nothing but silence since their "july or august" estimates last spring... can't really help

Same here, I've ordered two UPA-1's and I have no preamp whatsoever. Didn't want to get the USP-1 since I knew the X-version was coming, and I want the best But I don't know how long I can stand having two amps sitting there with no decent preamp. And I need bass management for my subwoofer I'm building.

Considering the price and specs, I personally say "Wait!". It sounds like it will be a heck of a DAC for the price (or 2xprice?). Doug

The XSP-1 will not have a DAC , it is an analog pre-amp just like the USP-1 but IMO, better. You will still need a XDA-1 or another DAC to go with it.

Yes, do tell. I have one and it has been flawless for the months that I've had it. The only problem I can recall is that there was some sort of headphone jack problem. Apparently it wasn't completely turning off the pre outputs. The problem was resolved as far as I know. I haven't read of any other issues with the USP-1.

I think there's just confusion...I think lancity is referring to issues w/the UMC-1.
Like the others, there was a headphone jack issue in very early USP-1's, but that is fixed now. And the only other issues is that some "Wish for" a feature in the USP-1 that's not part of the design...that being, some wish they could run the fronts in full range while using HT Bypass.
I have one and I run my fronts down to 50 hz then let the sub take over. Based on my Paradigm Studio 100's specs - that's low enough for them. But others want to run their fronts lower.

I have an USP-1 and I have not had any problems with it. Stan I say go for it and just buy one. Why wait when you can listen to your music now? You should have no problem reselling the USP once the XSP comes out. I have been thinking about getting another, maybe I'll take it off your hands

So it's an XDA, USP, and more rolled into one? No, I totally misunderstood your post. I thought you were on the fence on whether to wait for the XDA-1 or another DAC. A DAC was not on the XSP-1's plan that I know of. Doug

Personally, I think the USP-1 is hard to improve on. I've run my source through it and then direct from cd player to amp and I could hardly tell any difference. I've heard more of a difference switching interconnects. From my testing, I've concluded the Usp-1 is basically like straight wire.

briank, Newbie question. I am thinking of a similar setup of ERC-1, USP1, & a tuner & XPA-5 (this will be my first non-receiver setup) and noticed you have 5 channel amp total. Could I actually do 5.1 with the USP1? Or is it just strictly a L/R & sub configuration only. I do like to keep my 5.1 speakers setup. Thanks.

Hey ecod123, The USP-1 would be for left/right and sub configuration only, although since it has the Home Theater bypass option you can "add it to the mix" with a current receiver set up so you can use it for better SQ when listening to stereo only. I'm currently running a 2.1 system with my other 2 amps being unused in the closet. I'm waiting to buy a UMC-1 or the XMC-1 plus some new speakers before getting back to 5.1. Sold my last home theater set up with the house, Kinda thinking that was a mistake now, but whats done is done.

Ecod123, regarding what your considering, I would skip the USP-1 and go with the UMC-1 and the XPA-5 for an outstanding little home theater set-up. I would probably even skip on the ERC-1 and use a good sounding Blue-ray for your cd's as well as your movies. Also use some good speaker cable and interconnects. Skip Emotiva's Ultra cables and get their X-series. Just my .02 worth.

We're all here to learn. Thanks for the kind words about my surgery. I'm still mulling over the XSP/USP thing. I'll let you know my thoughts when they become clearer. Best Regards, Stan

I was a sure thing to buy an XDA-1 about a month ago, unfortunately I'm starting to waiver. Emo needs to make announcements on products and then actually get them to market in a reasonable time frame.

Emo needs to make announcements on products and then actually get them to market in a reasonable time frame. There's loads of used preamps on the internet. I bought one to go with my ERC/XPA/Jamo setup. Now that I have bought a good DAC with volume control, I no longer need it and I can sell it with only a few euros of loss!

Can the USP-1 be used as a full ranger in a music system without an AVR and subwoofer and when I add a sub, I will employ the use of the high and low filter pass to pass low frequencies to the sub?
