Too bad I don't need one...... although I am tempted to just buy one and add it to the collection. I wish the xpa2 or 3 was on sale. But then I suppose other people would be wishing that the upa5 was on sale........

Ooh. I was waiting for an XPA-3 sale , But I'm thinking UPA-5 ,bi-amping my Outlaw bookshelves might sound pretty smooth, and fine for my 5c center ,Hmm.

Would I see a significant improvement with UPA-5 or should I go with XPA-5. My speakers are kinda old but still work well, my fronts are Polk RTi70 and center is CSi40 and i believe Polk 30 for surround but I'm not at home right now. My receiver is a Pioneer VSX-1015 which supposedly has 120w per channel. Thanks in advance.

Music and movies were simply on different levels compared to receiver-only set up. Now between XPA and UPA, if money is "no object" get XPA but if you still want value but great impact, UPA is a solid choice. My amp in 2005 was the Anthem MCA-50 about 185 wpc. However, when I "compared" (loosely speaking and not A/B) MCA-50 with the UPA-7, I prefered the UPA-7. Center channel was muddy with MCA-50 and much better with UPA. Again, UPA would be a great improvement from the Pioneer. But, as always, YMMV. At this price, it's a steal even compared to my $494 July 4th saleabration.

How long will the sale last? I might be interested in the UPA-5 sometime in november or december 2010. More information would be nice. Thanks.

Well my new UPA-5 was delivered a couple of hours ago. Can't wait to get off of work and get it hooked up.
It'll be fed by an Onkyo TX-SR805 and an USP-1. Sources are an ERC-1, a Sony BDP-S570, a Technics SL-1200 MK2 & Shure M97xe, an AppleTV, and a DirecTV HD DVR.
All of that Emotiva power will be pouring out in to a pair of Klipsch La Scalas at mains, a nice DIY Academy knockoff, and a pair of Heresys at surround duty. For to bottom end is a pair of AE IB15-8 drivers in an attic mounted IB manifold and driven by a Behringer EP2500.
What should I use for the initial test run tonight?

So how's the UPA-5 doing jhoak? Pretty good. I had it all tied together by 6:00 PM and began listening. An assortment of music was played last night. Everything from Black Eyed Peas to Ottmar Leibert. It all sounded very very nice. I think my vintage Onkyo / Integra pair (P-306RS & M-506RS) may sound just a bit better but using them makes for a LOT of compromises. I'm willing to give up a tiny bit of quality (a very tiny bit) in exchange for things like a remote control, HT pass-through and MUCH better subwoofer integration. I still need to dial in the subwoofer level a bit and run the setup on the Onkyo. I didn't listen to any multi-channel stuff or play a movie through it. I suspect that won't happen until the weekend. There are still two pieces of the puzzle missing. I have a XDA-1 reserved and I'm researching some manner of subwoofer equalizer to better match the sub to my room. I think that I'll also be looking at more or better acoustic treatments to the room very soon. What I have now is good but I suspect that there is some room for improvement. I'll try to post a picture or two in the next day or so. Right now I'm very very pleased... ;D

Thanks for the reply. Did you get a chance to compare it all to the 805 and it's internal amps?

Did you get a chance to compare it all to the 805 and it's internal amps? Yes I did. When I saw the UPA-5 at such a good price I made the decision to buy one pretty quickly. The next thing I did was remove my Onkyo / Integra 2-channel system and place the 805 back in to service. I got to listen to the 805 exclusively for several days. That was quite deliberate. I wanted a genuine"basis of comparison" for when the UPA-5 ultimately went in to place. Conclusions... The 805 is a VERY nice receiver. Nicer than it should be at its price point. I mean I only paid $425 delivered for it. That said as nice as it is I found it somewhat "unsatisfying" on 2-channel music. All in all I found the output of the 805 just seemed to be a little "thin" for lack of a better term. The music lacked the "body" or "weight" or "fullness" that I enjoyed with the Onkyo 2-channel kit. Not bad by any stretch just not "great". I wanted... no... I needed... “GREAT”. The addition of the UPA-5 has bridged that chasm between wanting great 2-channel playback most of the time and still having very good multi-channel sound on the fairly rare occasions that I watch a movie or spin a SACD. It's certainly not that the 805 is "bad" because it's most assuredly NOT. It's just that the sound is so much better with the weight of a dedicated amplifier behind it. Please don't get the idea that I am criticizing the 805 in any way shape or form. I am not. It is a simply spectacular piece of hardware. The engineers at Onkyo certainly outdid themselves on this design. Now... If you're looking for a “budget” pre/pro that will give you a bunch of the bells and whistles that are currently available and sound great to boot look no further than an Onkyo TX-SR805. It just does pretty much everything very well. Even if you never hook a pair of speakers to the built in amplifiers. Which reminds me... I need to remove my various “for sale” ads for this guy. As a bit of a “side note”. I have been following the several threads about using a multi-channel amp for 2-channel duty with great interest. In my house the UPA-5 will spend 90%+ of its operational time driving two channels only. I'm curious to see if there are any long term negative effects. I remain very VERY pleased with the UPA-5 and my decision to purchase it and integrate it in to my system. For those of you that may be “on the fence” about picking one of these up my advice is just do it. At $399 delivered there is absolutely NOTHING out there that can touch it in terms of sound quality OR value. Worst case you can flip it in a few weeks or return it (I do not condone returning non-defective equipment) and all you're out is the shipping cost. Yes... I'm an Emotiva “fanboy” and proud of it. If you'll excuse me Mr. Clapton is calling me from the living room. He requires my complete attention. ;D

Thanks for that bro! I had an 805 (and currently have a 605 & 705) for years. So I'm pretty familiar with it and know how GREAT of a receiver it is. Especially for the price! I think I'm gonna be calling Emo in the morning.

Just finished hooking up the UPA-5. I actually used it to replace an XPA-5. I was using the 5 for surrounds, center and zone 2 speakers. The UPA-5 sounds every bit as good with my setup. I'll be listing the XPA-5, USP-1 and 2 UPA-1's for sale next week. This is all because I got a Jones for an intergrated tube stereo. It never ends........................
