current setup consists of the following components:
Epson Home cinema 1080ub projector
TWC SAHDSTB
Belkin PF60 conditioner
PS3 slim 120gb
Toshiba HD-a30
Oppo BDP83
UMC-1
XPA-5
UPA-2
LS-6 towers
X-Voce Center
ERD-1 for surrounds
UAC 8.2's for back rears
dual ED a2-300 subwoofers
this is my experiences with teaming the UMC to TWC stb
(scientific atlanta 8300 series specifically)
now the SA STB is odd duck and its a far cry from being great.
video:
its limited and sometimes poor its only passes 1080i out via hdmi or component cables. the internal up-conversion is garbage, that being said setting the unit to show native "video" is the best bet, giving you the full screen with the least amount of artifacts and what not. the difference in HD content and SD content is noticeable but tolerable.
the UMC and this unit dont play well together if the UMC is set to PASS youll find that going back and forth between SD & HD content the handshake is lost. so setting the UMC to auto or 1080p60 will give me the most consistent trouble free video. i use (1080p60)
audio:
the UNIT does have a few options allowing the user to use:
digital coax out
optical out
standard R&L
hdmi out for audio.
Now using HDMI out for audio your not given a choice on the processing. its defaulted to "hdmi" which is fine and actually probably more desirable, because its actually from my best guess passing the audio as Native. this is where i believe the dropouts and signal lock on changes occur.
my solution, easy use digital coax tell the STB to output DD, (which all HD content on the STB is DD anyway) what happens is no more mode change detection from the UMC for commercials, shifts between shows recorded differently etc...
the signal lock form the UMC only happens once at this point, ie when the stb is turned on. no more pop ups of DD 2.0 and no more lost Center..
