I get this with my iPad too.
A USB device can can be self powered or rely on the connected device to supply power.
Some USB devices rely on the connected device(PC iPad) because they have no power connection.
If you can supply power in you device, you should. It's just how you wire the USB/Serial chip.
I'm disappointed that the XDA-1 didn't do so!

The ones we have are a small plug in to the ipad and have a USB output (is this what you are using?). At least the ones we have work great and I can find out who made them and let you know.

Yes this is what I am trying to use. It's the Apple branded camera connector, standard male iPod connector on one side and a female USB A connector on the other. It's about 1" square.

Lonnie, Please do! I didn't know that anything but Apple's USB kit was available. But, it's just an adapter that brings the out the usb signals and power from the apple dock. No active components that I know of. Apple USB Connector:

I've seen reports that using a powered USB hub can overcome this problem.

"iOS 4.2 said to be blocking iPad Camera Kit from supporting some USB devices""the problem seems to boil down to the amount of power that can be emitted from the iPad's 30-pin connector -- it used to be 100mA, but iOS 4.2 appears to have cut that down to just 20mA, presumably in an attempt to conserve battery life. The big issue there, of course, is that everything from USB keyboards to microphones and even some cameras no longer work, and there isn't much for users left to do other than to hope that Apple brings back support in a future update."www.engadget.com/2010/12/06/ios-4-2-said-to-blocking-ipad-camera-kit-from-supporting-some-us/.

We seem to have the same item, but it doesn't work for us. If the iPad senses too much current being drawn from the connected device it will not run it. I have successfully used a Turtle-Beach USB sound card that has an optical port with no problem on the same Apple connector. The XDA-1 may just be on the hairy edge as far a current draw, making some units work and others not. As stated in a previous post above, a powered USB hub should fix the problem.

What IOS versions are being used on the ones that work and the ones that don't? I've also heard (on head-fi) that IOS seems to be more particular about USB power issues.

The iPads we have here are some of the first ones made, so that could be the difference.
That is a real bummer that Apple decided to do that.
I wonder if enough people note it on their forums they will change it? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Just kidding ;D ;D

Though there's no official participation from Apple in their forums, some of the developers do watch the forums for what's happening. But the real way to be sure you're being heard is to file a bug. This takes a little effort up front but if ya wanna know you're being heard... Sign up for a developer Apple ID here: developer.apple.com/programs/register/Use the Safari developer option for a zero dollars per year membership Then sign into bugreport.apple.com to file a bug. Hope this helps

A number of Apple users are reporting that some of their SD camera memory cards that draw too much power are no longer working with the CCK. You can bet they will address that!
My bet would be an adjustable current draw parameter in the iPad settings in an upcoming release.

My bet would be Apple ignoring the problem and blaming the connected device, but hey, that's me.
I hope to be proven wrong.

I bought a medialink powered USB hub ($20) and it works like a charm with my iPad... Typing this on the iPad while listening. SQ is pretty good to boot. (running the 4.2 update on the iPad.)
