Its actually quite detailed and has presence. Lovely midrange and everything is seperated handling complex mixes well, and at times sounds like what I would imagine a master copy in the studio to sound like.
Quite happy as I usually am when buying emotiva.

My XDA-1 should be on my doorstep tomorrow, I'm sure I will be just as impressed.
Initially I will have it connected to my UMC-1 and XPA-5 with an iPod and Wadia 170i as the source.
We move into a new home next week and will try connecting directly to my XPA-2. I will also try playing flac from a PC via USB.
I'm looking forward to hearing the difference between these setups.
Dave.

i wish i could be enthusiastically endorse the xda-1 too. got mine today, spent a half-hour listened to it via sb3 with flac sources. do you believe in burn-in?
it's definitely a forward sounding DAC, louder than Lavry DA10. these two traits can classified as positive attributes, but that's where it ends. Glad no one bought my DA10 yet!!!

Well, the DA10 lists for about a thousand bucks, could it be that it is superior to the Emo 300 dollar unit?
As far as the XDA in my system, it is superior to the ERC alone, and further improves the end product. I'm pretty happy.

well, the lavry da-10 might be the perfect little dac in the world, i know i had tested many dacs on head-fi forum...but i expected the xda-1 to be close. you know the xda-1 has the look, remote, and matches my nht xda amp...but the sound, unfortunately. but for the price, no one should be complaining about it though...but i'm sounding out my findings...

Please respond all of you,who have received the XDA-1.thanks There is no manual that comes with it. Just make sure that if you decide to connect it directly to a power amp (as opposed to a preamp) that you turn the volume all the way down before using it and then very slowly increase it. Otherwise you may blow out your speakers and/or amp.

just make sure you turnoff all associate equips b4 turning on the xda-1. down the volume to zero then turn on other equipments. think of 'standby' button as off and 'on' as on, of course.

mrla how do you like the NHT Xd rig? it takes sometime to get used to it, but they're probably the most accurate tranducers i've listened to(not as sweet as the nht focus series, 1.5, 2.5, 3.3 series). just a bit bass shy, i'm a basshead. reason the xda-1 looked so appealing to me was it has extra pair of output where i can add another sub, say a rythmik. i know i can add another xd sub but i have to raise xover to 135hz which i don't want to do.

Glad no one bought my DA10 yet!!! I think it might be expecting too much for the XDA to beat the Lavry... I am very impressed with my XDA; the combination of price, features, sound quality and looks is unbeatable... But in absolute sonic terms I prefer my Benchmark DAC1... There's no shame in the $300 XDA-1 being beaten by the $1K DAC1 or the DA10...

I'd love to know if you've reached the same conclusions as me...

Compared to the Sony the XDA sounds more forward and seems to have a better midrange. I dont remember the DAC1 sounding much different from the Sony. What I plan to do is listen to the XDA for a while, and then more to the Benchmark. I think I would have a more accurate sense of what I prefer. I used to have a Beresford (well I still do) and it sounded ok, but in the end was too recessed and lifeless. The XDA seems to be on the opposit eend of the spectrum and certainly the sense is more of an alive "presence" than a simulation when I am listening to music. But I am also curious to see what happens when I put the benchmark back in. I wish I could do the process quicker! But I do need the time

If you haven't already, I'd suggest removing the cover of the DAC1 and changing the internal attenuation from -20db to 0db... I found that it made a real improvement in the sound...
