Trying this for the first time. Note: Not my kitchen. How do you like it? I brought back my brother a 6 pack from Iceland ( it was the Dopplebock from the same company) last November, he thought it was one of the best beers he's ever had. Btw, did you buy it here stateside?

Summer cooler: Chill a "sweet heart" watermelon. In a blender, add a peeled 3" piece of fresh ginger and the juice of one fresh lime. Chop until fine. Add the flesh of the watermelon until it is all incorporated, and three or four ice cubes to blend until slushy. In a tall tumbler, half-fill with ice and add 2-3 ounces of Tito's vodka. Fill glass with watermelon mixture. Top with a mint sprig if desired. Yum.

While I've never been much of an alcohol aficionado, I've found the older I get, the more I've started to appreciate certain spirits. Lately it's been sipping tequilas, but for my birthday back in March I was gifted with what I'm told to be a quite nice entry into Japanese whisky's. I've not opened it yet, but look forward to having a weekend drink at some point soon of this 12yr single malt Yamakazi.

The Japanese now claim to have the "best" Scotch in the world.. that's right... even better than Scotland. However on a technicality, even though it is excellent, it cannot be called Scotch! (It's not Scottish).

What is it about bourbon barrel aged that makes everything that it is done too taste so good ? Can't imagine. But it does add a nice character and this particular wine finishes quite nicely.

It's strong unpeated scotch at 50% alcohol. Peated scotch can be an acquired taste. I did acquire it. Isle of Islay and Isle of Skye has some of the best. Actually, Bruichladdich probably has the best of the lot for peated stuff. Their Octomore 07.4 is an example. Not cheap at around $250 but it really is superb. Laphroaig and Lagavulin are some of the runners up. Not bad wee drams.. but not cheap either. But about half the cost of the Bruichladdich peated amber nectar.

I've not opened it yet, but look forward to having a weekend drink at some point soon of this 12yr single malt Yamakazi. Yamazaki is a product of Suntory. They now own Jim Beam and also produce beer and soft drinks. They also own Courvoisier, Gilbey's, Canadian Club, Grenore, Laphroaig and many more, the list is long! 2015’s “World Whisky of the Year” went to Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013. The competitive Nikka distillery (now owned by Asahi) near Noriko's Sendai is the other very well regarded scotch type whiskey company in Japan. They both are world class and have won numerous top awards. Nikka makes Yoichi, Miyagiko and Taketsuru single malts plus the lower priced Black Nikka. In 2008, Yoichi 20 Year Old was voted best single malt at the World Whiskies Awards. The founder, Masataka Taketsuru, traveled to Scotland in 1918 to learn the process of distilling Scotch whisky first hand. He studied organic chemistry at the University of Glasgow and malt whisky production at the Hazelburn distillery, in Campbeltown. He married Jessie Roberta "Rita" Cowan, the daughter of a Glasgow doctor, and returned with her to Japan in 1920. In 1923 he joined Kotobukiya (currently Suntory) and helped to establish a distillery before starting Nikka in 1934. I have toured the Nikka distillery near Sendai, an impressive tour and facilty. Personally I don't care that much for the Japanese or American whiskey or bourbon. I can't now drink more than a small amount (cardiologist's orders). I prefer the much smoother Canadian blended brands. MacNaughton's Blended Canadian Whiskey is very smooth and for me a huge best buy! The money I saved up over the years buying the inexpensive MacNaughton's allowed me recently to buy an Italian car! www.forbes.com/sites/karlaalindahao/2015/11/30/japanese-whisky-bottles-to-try-now-2016/#1d998be13ef6PS: あなたが購入する日本のウイスキー1瓶につき1000円を頂戴します。

As a reference point my go to Scotch is Highland Park 12 and 18.
