First, let me state that I think Emotiva should have included a manual with the XDA-1. It would make life easier for all especially those of us who are new to DACs and their implemntation.
I am trying to figure out the best way to intergrate this into my system. The pieces it will be connected to are the UMC-1 and a Panasonic DMP-BD85K. I have access to Digital Coaxial, Optical as well as analog cables.
One of my concerns is the XDA-1 is used for two channel music. How do I use the XDA-1 for two channel with panasonic BluRay player while using this same player for BluRay playback as well? Can anyone please explain the connections/hookup required to accomplish this? Thanks, Eric

One option is:
Digital Coax from BluRay Player to XDA-1. Then, interconnects (RCA) from the XDA-1 to the UMC-1 (for 2 channel audio) to CD input. Then hdmi from the BluRay to the UMC-1 (for movies)
That is how I hooked up my system (I only have a DVD player and receiver).
If you hunt around this forum you will be able to find hookup diagrams that others recommend or are using. I found that very helpful.

Thanks, corgidog! So I guess from what you're saying I could have the BluRay hooked up to the analog inputs and switch to CD on the UMC-1 for two channel listening and hook the HDMI from the Bluray player to the UMC-1 HDMI input for BluRay playback? This would not cause a conflict for the BluRay player as long as the proper input is selected on the UMC-1, correct?

Yes. But a "purer" hookup would be to use the L/R of the 7.1 inputs on the UMC-1 rather than the CD inputs. It depends on whether you still need crossover and bass management features available. CD in allows that.

I'm getting a better result via silver coaxial cable versus the digital connection

I would like to use a sub for two channel listening so I guess the RCA CD input sounds like the way to go? Thanks!
rclark-I assume you are talking about the RCA inputs?

There should not be any conflicts. When a disc is playing in your BluRay player it is sending a signal out the digital coax as well as the hdmi. I've done some listenning tests comparing a cd playing through the XDA-1 and a cd using the DACs in my Dvd player via an HDMI cable, flipping back and forth. Guess what? I can't tell the difference. I mean there is no big change in the quality of the music to me. I was expecting something that would make me sit up and say wow! but no, nada, nothing. I posted this observaton in another thread and I know I am commiting audio heresy by saying this. I am not going to return the XDA-1 as I know it is a great product.
My equipment is a Pioneer VSX-03 and a Pioneer DV-48 Player. I am using silver/copper hybrid digital interconnect and Cardas interconnects, played through Monitor Audio RS-6s.

corgidog,
I appreciate your candid response regarding the comparison of the XDA-1 to your dvd players' DACs. I think many people suffer from the "placebo effect" when it comes to audio. Meaning if I paid more for this new cable, amplifier, DAC etc, it must be better. I do expect to hear a difference with the XDA-1. If I don't, it will very likely be returned or sold.

It is kinda disappointing to hook up the XDA-1 and not hear what others hear. In another post, I related the story of my buying a Nakamichi OMS4 CD player and replacing a Denon player. This was the only time I actually heard a difference in sound when installing a new product. I will continue to run my little tests with the hope that there is indeed a positive change in performance when using the XDA-1. I am such the optimist.

Go direct from DVD player -> XDA-1 -> AMPs. I am sure you can tell the difference after this setup.

I agree with that, corgidog59 you better bypass the umc-1 or simply use the analog 5.1/7.1 inputs if you really want to experience a difference.

I don't have a UMC-1 but it was suggested to me that I try the multi-channel inputs and not the cd input using pure direct mode. I think I am spending more time behind my system then in front of it. lol

When I find myself doing that I just leave it alone and get back to what I have it for, listening to music. Then after a couple weeks I can't stand it and have to get back under the hood! ;D
