Pretty cool link. But I think the section showing permanent hearing loss is a bunch of BS. It says that ... 115 dB .46875 min (~30 sec =permanent hearing loss. So they say a concert is 120db+ A concert lasts for hours. And they say that 115db at 30 seconds causes permanent hearing loss. Then I guess there are millions of deaf people. I dont buy that one bit. I grew up with my car pushing 135db and would cruise and listen to it for hours on end. I still have great hearing according to hearing tests and I can still hear stuff other people cant. When I party at home my system is at 115 to 117db. I should be deaf I guess but instead I have great hearing. I think they need to rethink their numbers for the real world. EDIT. I just saw this also ... 120 dB - Rock concert, Jet engine. Painful. Threshold of painThese people must be effin wimps.

I assume you're talking sustained average levels and not just brief peaks. If so, I think you must have bionic ears. ;D

A measly 112.3 for me. The loudest I listen is usually around 95 - 100 db. That leaves 12 - 17db for brief peaks.

Even though my db ratings were really high, 95-100 is plenty load for me and still kickin'! The remainder is the headroom?

Headroom? Does it have ears? Nope. Thats the room I keep my head in when I'm not using it. Some would say thats most of the time...

Give it time, you will miss it when its gone. I didn't notice any hearing loss until years (except short term for a day or so after being onstage or in the front row of a concert) after those abuses. I now listen at very modest levels most of the time even though my system is capable of very high levels. I know my hearing is not as good as it once was. Of course years of taking anti-inflamatories has also done my hearing no good. Well... Its 111db with 300 watts which is what the subs get (total 600 watts at 4 ohms a piece) and the center's mid-woofer gets 200, all the mid-woofers are 8 ohms. But the whole active crossover thing makes it difficult to compute. The tweeters all get 140 watts and the R/L front mid-woofers get 140 watts. Haven't even come close to reaching the limit according to the meters in the miniDSP software. I don't go for painful levels, don't even want to get close and I'm irritating my neighbors as it is. Also, keep in mind that because you are male you will lose hearing faster because of the influence of testosterone on the inner ear with aging. Those little wavy things (never did that good in anatomy and physiology) in the inner ear just become increasingly rigid. Drinking also temporarily decreases hearing sensitivity making it easy to do damage when under the effect of alcohol (weed doesn't do this). So its up to you to judge the risk. Also, the only area I feel a need for more power is for the subs. I want to give them a considerable boost below 20Hz. Perhaps I could trade my UPA-2 for a BG. I would then route the XPA-3's outputs to the three front mid-woofers, the UPA-5 to tweeters and surrounds and the BG for the subs. Not that its necessary, according to the above mentioned meters the bass signal hardly ever gets above -50.

I can hit 126.3. If I move the couch 2 ft closer and move the speakers closer to the corners, can hit over 130db according to the calculator. I would never turn it up that loud and I am not sure if the RF-7 II's could hit 130 without causing damage. Maybe on peaks? I have had them playing at close to 120 with no problem, measuring from about 8 ft. away. That is pretty impressive. Room gain and setup make a huge difference as well. With the XPA-1's and RF-7 II's, pretty tough to beat. I keep them 24" from the back wall. This is where they sound best with nice tight bass. These things are as loud or louder than my Marshall JVM 410 100w half stack.

I assume you're talking sustained average levels and not just brief peaks. If so, I think you must have bionic ears. ;D Im sure my system in my car was not a continuous 135db but it could and would hit it several times per song depending on the song. And of course this is not ear pearcing treble. Most the spl is from the subs in a car. Not that I had a crappy system at all. I had plenty of treble also as I had seperates in front and back. But my bass came from 3 JLW6 subs and I tried and used various amps. So all in all I would say the average would be around the mid 120's with peaks over 130db when I was in my car. Its not as loud as you all think. If your from my generation then you understand. If your old then you wont. But for that site to say that 120db for over 30 secs causes damage then like I said before there are millions of deaf people since a stupid concert lasts hours. I guess there are exceptions to the rule and I must be one. I have great hearing. Im fact my mother says Im like a dog because I can hear and smell things that no one else can. I even got a new tv for free because my old toshiba dlp fan had a high pitch sound that drove me nuts. HH Gregg sent out several old men (TV repair men) and none could hear the damn noise. after 5 old men I got pissed and told HH Gregg to send someone young or Im kicking their ass when they show up. They did not like me saying that but they did send out a young fellow. And sure enough. He heard it!!!! FINALLY Another young fellow with bionic ears like mine. Anyways to they said go online and pick out 3 comparable tv's to the one I had so of course I did not and picked 3 that were much better. 2 days later came a brand new plasma tv. My BIONIC ears paid off. ;D One other thing. think about the noise this way....Look at all the bands that have been playing for years. Why are they not deaf? If they were you would not go hear them. Because it would sound like Lou Ferigno singing.

They only mention that for safety measures! ... Preventive Caution! It's only smart advice to protect people's hearing loss! The numbers shown were not just arbitrarily pulled out of thin air. My father almost entirely lost his hearing from years as a police officer at the shooting range without using protective gear. That was before those numbers were widely known and published. He required two hearing aids the rest of his life and still couldn't understand everything said to him. Hearing is too fine a gift to take unnecessary chances with.

Now gun blasts do hurt my ears. I could only imagine how loud they are. I remember the first time I shot my Ar-15 and AK47. I forgot to use ear protection and at the same time me and my cousin pulled the trigger on both my guns it was so loud. I had never heard assault rifles before. Never again will I shoot them without ear plugs. My ears rang for hours and I could not hear anything. I bet it was over 150db. Ill being my spl meter next time and see.

There is a scene in the movie "Black Hawk Down" where a soldier is shooting a high caliber automatic machine gun and another soldier is standing right there by his side. The guy can't hear a thing after that! ...And Ridley Scott is a very realistic film director.
