I have my PS3 sitting on top of my XDA-1 and together they both create some HEAT. The PS3's fan blows hot air to the rear of the unit where I am outputting optical to my XDA-1. I'm wondering if this is a problem.

Grab a couple squares/discs of wood/rubber/erasers/etc to use as feet under the Playstation, elevating it an inch or so to let air get around it. Shouldn't need any more than that.
Your optical output doesn't care about warm air.

As bobbyt says, this shouldn't be a problem, you could try to shift the ps3 to aim the airstream away from the optical, assuming this is an option...

Good to hear. I just wasn't sure if excess heat would cause something to fail internally.
I moved the PS3 to a different part of my stereo rack. Aesthetics aren't as good, but better safe than sorry.

It's a bit unfair don't you think to that you say the devices' "togetherness" creates heat, while in my experience the XDA-1 is pretty moderate, but my son's 1ste gen PS3 is about the hottest device we own if I dismiss our 5 kW wok-burner.... ;D
