If there is no benefit in connecting RCA to XLR in terms of SQ, then my old crazy overpriced cables from Monster/Belkin/Sony must have been all "crapola" because I see such a drastic improvement on SQ! Thanks for your post Porscheguy~~~ What are the cables you replaced those with for comparison? I'm using RCA to XLR to connect my UPA-1s, but that's mainly because the UMC-1 RCAs are a little weak. Thanks. Nemesis.ie-> I'm using www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10244&cs_id=1024404&p_id=4778&seq=1&format=3#specification which replaced Monster Cables (RCA).

Moovtune-> Oh BTW, in the back panel of XPA-5, there is a switch for XLR balanced which must be on if you are connecting via XLR. Yes, I know about the switch. But you're coming from the RCA's on the UMC to XLR on the XPA. How does that effect impedance is what I was wondering. Your cables don't have an impedance converter built in do they? And from my experience, switching back to RCA's didn't have any effect on my sound quality. Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong but I think in general you'd expect a decrease in impedance going from unbalanced RCA to balanced XLR but I have not experienced any "hum" or other types of artifact issues using the cables I got which have these features: 16AWG Stranded Copper Wire Conduits. 97.5% Shielded Connections Gold Plated Connectors Metallic Graphite Colored Connector Housings Molded Strain Relief Boots. You can find converters like this www.eavtech.com.au/branded_frames..../rbbl4_ld.shtml but the cost is not justified since I have no issues. It seems like people use these types of converters to get rid of the "hum". The cables do not have the impedance converter built in...I'm not aware of any cable which does that.

Glad I'm not the only person who thinks so.

Going from RCA to XLR in a cable is nothing more than a rudimentary cable adaptor. It does not do anything.
In fact XLR or "balanced" connections rarely if ever really offer any merit. I read in a poll that most people don't even use them because of all the changes in modern day electronic's/cables shielding..
There are a lot of guys around here that have had the exact opposite results with XLR meaning noise....

That looks nice too! I couldn't help but notice that you are using 1 x MiniDSP for sub EQ. How do you have it set up and how does it affect the bass sound?
