The HD600 deal fell through so I picked up a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 880 600 Ohm.

I went through the HP journey. But with my Beyer DT990 600ohm & audio-gd NFB-11, I seem to have reached a happy endpoint.

Beyers are nice neutral-sounding cans. I found them to be a bit heavy and hot for extended listening sessions, but as in everything YMMV.

They felt really heavy and my ears started sweating after about an hour and a half. I never noticed that they sounded too bright.

I like the HD600 so much that I have two pair. I wish I could afford a Schitt amp but the Asus Xonar Essence does a really good job of powering them.

Since your into DIY you should really give the Crack OTL a look see. That's why I originally wanted the HD600. I heard the two were a match made in heaven.

... my HD650's sound really good driven by the Grant DAC09... I would love to hear the HD650 or the HD800. I would like to hear the Audeze LCD-2 also, but they are a little out of my price range and I don't think they would pair well with the Crack.

... my HD650's sound really good driven by the Grant DAC09... Do you or have you used the Grant DAC09 for anything else besides a headphone amp? I was just wondering what you think of it for other applications. Do you have an XDA-1? If so, how do those two compare? I read a few customer posts on other forums that they felt it was sort of bright or harsh.

It was a little thin and even bright with the stock tube, but after I swapped in a NOS yellow label Western Electric 396A it recovered the bass and warmed up significantly. Not bright at all now.

Oh, I missed the question about the XDA-1. Yes, I compared the two, actually doing an A/B with several tracks and a variety of musical styles. The XDA-1 was far too analytical and cold sounding for my taste.

The last pair of full sized cans I owned were the LCD-2's. They paired pretty well with the Zana Deux and were probably the best headphones I've heard. I preferred them to the Senn 800's. But definitely keep your eyes out for a pair of HD600's as paired with the Crack they should really sing.

I would love to pair that up with the LCD-2. Someday... someday.

Got the new "cans" in today and oiled the base on the Crack. Here is a new pic:
