From Soft to Loud; Heavy Metal music is 'stagnant', constant, unlike Classical music. ...The recordings.
Do you know what I mean? ...You turn up the volume level at a certain point and you get +/- only few dBs from the soft to loud musical passages. That's what I meant by true dynamics.
I'm surprised that you didn't understand this simple and obvious known fact.

Well in general, I hate country music. Except I do like Dwight Yoakam and Johnny Cash and Clint Black, and some older stuff like Buck Owens and Glen Campbell, and since I don't normally listen to country I'm sure there are many other artists I could like as well. So it's unwise to make sweeping generalizations about music (or about anything, really) because they will always be wrong once you discover the exception. As an aside, I distrust EVERYTHING published by Stereophile without exception.

I love it all! Black Sabbath started it all that's for sure. Let's see Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy, AC\DC, Dio, Black Label Society,Scorpions, Pantera, Tool, System Of A Down, Def Leppard, Dokken, Godsmack, GNR, Metallica, Motorhead, Slayer,Korn, Queensryche.......the list goes on and on. I like a well produced album unfortunately,IMO most metal isn't recorded well. "Operation Mindcrime" is one of my all time favorite albums after "Dark Side of the Moon" and"Live After Death". ;D

This thread rocks!!!! We can't forget Rage Against the Machine, their first record is a classic. Not quite HEAVY metal...but definitely not mellow either. I love Audio Slave's first record as well. It's not really what I would consider "metal" though.

Sometimes its heavy loud and sinister, at other times its beautiful and dynamic. Prog metal is almost like a sonic journey. Its all in there!!

Progressive Rock is my bag. Yep, prog is good too. I've seen DT over 20 times. Just got tickets to see them and Trivium at the Beacon Theater in NYC in Oct. Soooo glad they got rid of Portnoy. And one of my favorite albums is still Queensryche's 'Operation Mindcrime', even though their new stuff is pretty terrible. Can't get rid of Portnoy, he owns the Dream Theater name along with Petrucci. He left for a break from the band (with Avenged Sevenfold) and will be back. Not sure why you are glad he is gone, as he is arguably the best drummer on the planet. Mike Mangini is drumming for them now...

Any more answers to the original questions?

1. I range from heavy metal to an industrial style metal. 2. Deftones, Metallica, Korn, SOAD, Slipknot, to people like KMFDM, Psyclon 9, Helltrash, NIN. 3. I like more bass heavy sounding production. 4. I think hardcore music has ruined metal.

He is no longer with Avenged Sevenfold. Actually, when he teamed up with A7X it was their request because their drummer died and MP was his idol. At this time he was still a member of DT. Regardless, this is old news. Why am I glad he's gone? Let's see.... I agree, he is one of the best drummers out there. However, his song writing in DT had become painfully predictable and cliche. How many times do we need to hear about the death of his father or his battle with alcoholism? Live DT shows may have well been renamed 'The Mike Portnoy Show'. The guy is just a little too full of himself. I am just very excited to see how his removal will change the band.....for better or worse? -- specifically in the song writing. We know Mangini is more than capable of handling the chops.

4. I think hardcore music has ruined metal. Interesting comment from someone who lists Slipknot, Korn and Deftones as faves. Those bands took metal and hardcore and created something new. What makes you say this (or perhaps I'm not using the term hardcore the same way you are)?
