That would be my guess. I hope they do something along the lines of the Onkyo (dual 32 bit 192 khz). That would be sweet! I am liking the way they are trying to refresh their product line more often.

Kind of strange. They delay the release of the XSP for upwards of a year because it somewhat hampered the soundstage when paired with the XDA-1. So now they are stopping production of the XDA-1, the product that delayed the XSP's release. What kind of deal is that?

I would rather have delays and an awesome product, than products being released with rapid fire regularity that are kind of "ho-hum"...just sayin'... I am anxiously awaiting Emo's next DAC. I am hoping it has the same features as the XDA-1 (fully balanced, remote, can be used as preamp, etc), along with the usual wish list for the current DAC (dim-able/defeat-able front panel, bitrate display, etc.). In addition, I would LOVE to see them drop some Sabre 32 DACs in there, instead of the current Analog Devices DAC they seem to love. Wishful thinking I know. ;D

Maybe they have a bunch of XSP-1's coming to their warehouse and the other products are taking up too much room.

If they do upgrade to a XDA-2, will they offer an upgrade coupon for those with XDA-1's? I could move the XDA-1 to the bedroom full tower/AudioEngine A5 set-up and put the XDA-2 in the main room where the 1 currently resides.

I sent Emo an email about an XDA-2.
Vincent said "Hello Matt we are always expanding our products as time goes on, I am unaware of any other variant or newer model based on the XDA-1 at this time."

I would guess they have a load of these taking up space. Need room for the new products.

The discontinuance (with no successor) is likely due to a lack of sales. The problem with the XDA-1 is that when used with certain other equipment (and especially when used as a pre-amp) it can sound dreadful. Some comments on this board pussyfoot around that, others (like this, and a previous post of mine) are blunt about it. I use it because I can use the extra digital inputs and because I can configure to sound decent given the price. Certainly, there are buyers who are more than just satisfied with the XDA-1 and I do not begrudge them their pleasure with the unit. There just may not be enough of them to keep the unit in production nor enough to justify a successor.

Why does everyone assume "clearance sale" = "model discontinuance"?

"*Our standard 30-day in-home trial period is unavailable for clearance products. All sales are final."
"Quantities are limited; and when we’re out of stock – we’re out of stock, really."
Those two statements are a good indication of "model discontinuance" in my opinion.

Jump to whatever conclusion you like. But using the UMC-1 as an example, the model is not being discontinued, it is simply being upgraded. They want to clear out existing inventory because the next wave of UMC-1's is imminent. The same could very well be true concerning the XDA-1; neither you nor I know.

Could you elaborate on this? How would one not use it as a Pre-amp?

In either case, I'm looking forward to seeing the new items they need to make room for :-)

Could you elaborate on this? How would one not use it as a Pre-amp? It's possible that he is only familiar with the XDA-1 with the volume issue. In that case he'd be correct about using it as a pre-amp. Being that he is a guest he may not be up on the fixes that were done to it. Just thinking out loud.

I read their ad as the XDA-1 is history once stock is gone.
Given that: 1) the biggest feature of the XDA-1 was the newly designed output stage. 2) the lack of any new specs on the XSP for a while.
Speculation(and only that):
XSP1 = USP1 + XDA1 + enhancements
It is a minimal added cost to just add the DAC section as an input.

Are the XDA-1 on clearance 'burned-in' already? ;D

So, if the volume is not max out, the XDA is being used as a Pre-amp, otherwise not?
