Youthman,
All Stereo mode is for multi channel sources and can't be selected with a 2 channel source. It probably should be named differently like Milti-PCM or something.

Ah, that makes sense. With the Yamaha, I was able to select any setting for any source (if I'm remembering correctly).

If you try the pl2 music setting and give it a chance I think you'll be very surprised.I never used that setting on any other unit but on the UMC it does a great job.

2ch stereo sounded much bettter IMO than the PLII. I'll try it a few more times to see if I like it.

I used PLII for almost all stereo sources, it did a good job. I guess I'm not a big fan of listening to music in surround. Maybe a concert DVD but not CD's.

The beauty is that we have options with the UMC-1 to suit your own taste.
Another feature I like about the UMC-1 over my previous Yamaha RX-V1800 is having OSD over HDMI for volume control. It was so frustrating having my receiver behind a false wall and not being able to tell how loud the volume was without opening the cabinet door to see. Not sure why the Yammie could not do that.

So what do you call a young fart that is a traditionalist? I'm 36. I hope that's still considered young. LOL

D-toe...simple stereo is what I like for CD's. I only use multi-channel for things meant to be so.
Count me in the old farts, I mean..."aged flatulence", group.

I'm old school as well and prefer my 2CH music straight up . I tried DPLIIx and it just did not seem natural to me. But to each his own and whatever sounds best for each person is the way to go. No right or wrong with this IMO . Bill

Ok, getting back on track, last night I invited a few friends over to watch Unknown with Liam Neeson. This was the first movie I have watched with the UMC-1 and was using the same settings I had preset for Music. The LR sounded fantastic and were extremely detailed. The Center needs a little tweaking but dialog was still very clear. Overall it was good but I'm thinking it can be much better with time and changing some settings. It didn't sound balanced but I have not had a chance to check with my SPL meter to see if the calibration mic was off. Will have to post more when I can have some time to work on a preset settings that sound great for HT.
When playing a BR using MultiPCM from the PS3, the UMC-1 offers 4 sound options: Stereo, All Stereo, Direct and Dolby PLIIx. Stereo was out so it was either Direct, All Stereo or Dolby PLIIx. I believe Direct disables the sub and the EQ settings so I was down to either All Stereo or Dolby PLIIx. I would think that All Stereo doesn't allow for true 5.1 separation (but I have since read this might not be the case). So Dolby PLIIx was the setting I ended up using for the movie.
I guess in my brain, I really didn't want to use anything that has Prologic in the name since we have come a LONG way in surround processing since the original Dolby Prologic.
I'll need to spend some time comparing with demos that I am familiar with to see what the differences are and which is preferred.
