Hi Loungers My dealer called today and said he was bringing my amp and preamp back, so I asked him to bring me a good preamp for an audition. He agreed to do it. When he showed up at around 3:00 he had a Mcintosh c220 tube preamp with him. We hooked everything up and first listened using my Audio Research LS15.
Then he swapped out the LS15 and put the Mac in. I can tell you the difference was night and day. I couldn't believe what my ears were hearing. Everything just seemed to explode. The soundstage increased, bass got tighter, mids got clearer and the highs were beyond reproach.
It was expensive but it's all about the music.
I'm now the proud owner of a Mcintosh c220 tube preamp.
BTW, this is a full function preamp as it includes a phono stage.

That's awesome! I've listened to the c220 a lot at my dealer, and it's always my favorite compared to the others that he sells. Congrats on your new(beautiful)toy!

So that means you will be selling your LS-15 soon....umh!!! The LS15 is gone. I traded it in for the c220. Thanks for the kind words everyone. This preamp is awesome

Yes, the c220 is a sweet pre-amp. IIRC, this model only supports MM phono cartridges. I hope that doesn't prove to be an issue with you. Or better yet, my memory is flawed. ;D I was considering it for my 2-channel system as I have a huge LP collection, but in the end the price and the lack of MC support made me look elsewhere. It was very tempting, even at its elevated price. Congrats on your upgrade.

Congrats! That's a very nice piece.
The only problem I see with going Mac is it seems to be very addictive. Most that go Mcintosh... Usually go all Mcintosh. Which isn't a bad thing, but not easy on the wallet. Plus that vintage look stands out a little with other modern equipment. Just think about those beautiful blue meters... Mmm

Congrats and I agree with w27....that Mac gear can be an expensive addiction!
