I actually owned one of these, a much earlier version a couple years back and thought it was pretty good. This one is supposed to be more refined though. I paid about $78 on Amazon and paid extra for two day shipping which is worth it to me. So I should have the remote by Wednesday at the latest. I was looking into the Harmony remotes and maybe I just got caught up reading all the negative reviews as I tend to seek out negative first rather than later and their was just too much to be weary of. The Harmony One was at the top of my list but I kept reading about broken screens and faulty chargers, etc. I just couldn't see spending $140 and having issues. I'm crossing my fingers the MX-500 works well, is easy to use and reliable. Attachments:

Hey Wesm228, be sure and let us know how you like it. I've been considering one of those myself.

I believe its the same remote which came with the DMR-1. I've been using it for the past 4 years. Works with everything except the garage door opener. Love it.

Eltwo, was the 850 hard to program?

I have the programming software, which you can no longer download for free, but there are other sources of software that does work on this remote.
I didn't find it hard to program, you just have to be sure to lay out exactly what you want it to do (it uses a serial port to connect via a dongle). It's a fantastic remote.

It is also the same remote that came with the DMC-1, which Emotiva called "Remote 1", which I acquired from a member here on the Lounge. It's my main remote, but I had to learn all of the codes and edit screen button names. I quite like it and won't get anything else until it no longer works. I recommend that the OP get 2 sets of 4 rechargeable AAA batteries as mine need changing out about every 5 weeks.

I've tried finding the dongle for this remote and it's hard to come by now. I've found once you've gotten used to the learning function, I can program a new remote in less than 30 minutes or so, and that's with editing names.

Thanks, now just have to decide if the MX-500 is good enough or "pony up" for the 850.

I received the remote today but I haven't had a chance to set it up. I can tell you it is light, feels great in my large hands, all buttons are well spaced, exudes quality, love the backlight. LCS, thanks for the tip. Attachments:

I have the MX-900 and the programming software. I found there was a small learning curve at the beginning but once I got the hang of it, I found it to be extremely powerful and flexible. It uses 4 regular AAA batteries and I bought rechargeable ones thinking I would need to frequently charge them. But I find that the batteries last a long time, even with RF and IR turned on with macros.
Wes, Let us know how you like yours.

The MX-500 is large and the satin smooth finish looks great and feels perfect in your hand. Much better looking to me than those shiny ugly and slippery gloss finish remotes. www.remotecentral.com/mx500/index.htmlReviews 157, MSRP $149 (USD) Average: 4.80/5.00 Median: 5.00/5.00 (very high 4.8 user rating versus 4.17 for Harmony One)

I've tried finding the dongle for this remote and it's hard to come by now. Over at SurfRemoteControl he has a diagram on how to make your own programming cable. It's pretty easy. Here's the link: www.surfremotecontrol.com/DIY-cable

I loved the MX-500 when I had my DMR-1. I wish the UMC came with it. The macro buttons were great, and I loved having the backlight. The only problem was that it went through batteries as fast as a Tesla sports car lol.

URC makes great remotes. I've had the RF 30 for about 3-4 years and no problems. As stated once you get through the learning curve it's a breeze.

I'm loving this remote. It took me a while to learn the macros and learning functions properly. What can I say, I'm a slow learner but it's working great now and the macros allow me to turn on everything with one button push and off just as easy. I figured out the volume issue I was having with the incremental increases. When you learn the volume button you have to hold the volume button on the original remote down until the Mx-500 says GOOD, no sooner. Then it allows you to control volume exactly like the factory remote. I love feel, weight, gemstone buttons, lcd screen, everything so far is quality! Attachments:

Oh, I haven't figured out how to control the Xbox yet, but I believe I need an Xbox media remote as the controllers were a no go when I tried the learning function. If I can find one cheap enough to learn the functions from I will do so.
Another thing that's awesome is the IR signal strength. I went down the hallway which is behind the living room and pointed the remote out and it turned the tv on. If your in the room at all the remote will send out a signal that will be received whether the remote is facing up, down, sideways or back. It's a huge improvement over the UMC remote in this respect.
