Anyone is using one of these with the HT Bypass feature? I need to connect the W4S pre to the Integra DHC80.1, but not so clear about how to do so. The source is an Oppo BDP95 and want to keep all balanced. Thanks.

I have read a lot of good things about that preamp. How do you like it with the XPA-2?
Thanks - Eric

I've have this preamp but unfortunately it's in repair. I hope this is correct. Oppo xlrs to w4s input #1 xpa-s xlrs to w4s outputs #1 w4s-xlrs input #2 to Integra xlrs front right and left, not stereo. Select input #2 with w4s for HT-Bypass Input #1 will be for the amps,Oppo, and preamp for two channel. This is how I believe I had mine set up. My w4s has been out of my system for 5 weeks. Make sure you have all volumes lowered before actual test.

^ Sorry if we're talking about the same thing from a different angle:
1. BDP-95 XLR output to W4S XLR Input 1
2. DHC-80.1 XLR left and right (main) output to W4S XLR Input 2
3. W4S XLR output to XPA-1's (both sets of outputs are active, just use one obviously unless you're biamping/to crossover)
4. Set Input 2 to HT bypass on the STP-SE before you turn the 80.1 on for the first time. This is important.
5. Buy some Cardas caps (or equivalent) for unused inputs on the W4S to deal with input bleed and stray RF-EMI.This is 'gilding the lily' and can be done later if desired.
6. Set volume on BDP-95 to 100. Set volume on 80.1 to 0 prior to first use so that you're not blown through your back wall with your speakers on first use.
7. Now you use the volume control on the W4S for input 1 (start at 0 - also important) and use the the volume control on your 80.1 for input 2.
8. W4S reckon you need 200 hours run-in. I think mine only really sounded harsh for about an hour and then it settled down significantly.
9.Enjoy!
Edit: Point 6 and 7 more detail.

Oops, just realised from the OP that you might not have yet purchased the STP-SE and were just wondering how easy it was to do . Sorry for the step-by-step instructions. Set-up of HT bypass is done using the menu in the STP-SE and takes one minute to set up. You basically assign one of the inputs to HT bypass and the other 4 inputs you use as normal. The STP-SE and the XPA-1s seem to me to be a nice combination and I reckon they'll work well in your setup too. Cheers, Dave

Thanks. I think I'm buying the W4S next month. By the way, my Oppo 95 is vibrating while playing discs, is this normal? What about yours?

One more thing, I'm using a 9.2 setup, is this possible when using the HT bypass?

Hi leog2010,
No problems in a 9.2 setup. When the STP-SE is in HT bypass it is essentially invisible. You just use your pre-pro as normal.
With respect to the BDP-95, I don't have that problem. Maybe you should post a question in the sources section and see if anyone knows what the issue is. I'd be emailing Oppo also.

Thanks Dave for your help. One more about the Oppo. If you place your hand on top of the player while playing a disc, what do you feel?

After reading your post above, I tried it out... with a disc playing, place my hand on the Oppo-95 and feel an ever-so-slight vibration. Nothing major at all. I think that's normal.

This is the answer I´ve got from Oppo customer´s service:
"Disc vibration will be normal on this player as the player does not use any kind of loader dampening. "

Thanks. I think I'm buying the W4S next month. By the way, my Oppo 95 is vibrating while playing discs, is this normal? What about yours? If your interested I might be selling mine after I get it back from W4S. I first have to do a few different listening sessions. The preamp is 1 year old. Contact me if interested. Kim

What happened to your preamp? Why did you send it to repair?

What happened to your preamp? Why did you send it to repair? The balance control was failing. There was about a 8 dbs difference per side. I believe also we encountered a failure of another kind with popping in one speaker during shut down. It's an amazing preamp. I should be getting it back next week. W4S professional staff is great to work with.

I agree with you about the staff and service. When I got my pre-amp the remote code interfered with my Audio Space CDP-8A tube cd player. They took my pre-amp and did a special program with it so there is no interference anymore. they did this free of charge and one day service with free shipping back to me.

+1 W4S after sales service.
When I bought mine, they helped me sort out an EMI/RF issue which ultimately turned out to be due to my Yamaha AVR but gave me their time regardless .
