Yes, isolating the sub will help. If placed directly on wooden floorboards, the sub can sound boomy. If placed on a concrete or stone surface, it may sound flat. It is useful to decouple the sub from the surface beneath. Your choices are isolation feet or something like SubDude from Auralex.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this. But I was thinking about TacT and that as a room correction system, it calibrates the mains, sub and the room. Is there any benefit to spend money on sub with EQ when the pre/pro has Audyssey or TacT. I'm thinking about the promised X/REF-15 with PEQ. Maybe you could save $200.00 off the price of the sub but yet, lose no performance!

Don't most subwoofers come with rubber feet for isolation? I know my SVS did and it's a monster, or are we talking about more isolation than what the manufacturers provide?

I have both of my subs upstairs on isolation platforms along with rubber feet to decouple them from the room. It helped tighten up the sound and stopped every wall upstairs from vibrating the pictures off or rattling windows to a degree. I got mine from eD but the Subdude is basically the same thing as the eDs except mine was made to fit my A5s-300 s. They have many different sizes depending on the model/size of your sub. www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?cPath=2_126&products_id=944 BTW, I have a pair of Time Frames. Only non Polk speakers I ever owned. The sock material is a mess on one after I had to replace a blown rear tweeter. However, I like the sound and always wanted to listen to pair of Time Windrows.

I've installed my SubDude now. I can say that I immediately noticed that the bass was more "direct" and less "boomy". Before the SubDude, the sub was on the carpeted floor and it was not decoupled from the riser below. Subsequently a substantial amount lot of energy was being transmitted to the riser, leading to the boominess. This is now rectified and I like the low-end punch as it is more "defined". Hope this makes sense!

If you are handy you can make your own "subdude" type of decoupler very inexpensively. About 30 years ago I made one to fit specifically on bricks in front of the fireplace. I had some scrap plywood, glued on some cork, then a quarter inch peg board, then glued on 6 old rubber hand-balls, and capped it off with another layer of plywood. I painted the works with several layers of black spray paint. Worked like a charm and used it for better than 20 years. I gave it to a friend when I moved cross country. I had less than $20 invested in my "dude". It made a major improvement in good tight bass response.

so reading this thread, I have 2 ultra 12's,they came with metal spikes & rubber feet(as many know),
what feet are better to use since I have both subs on auralex grammas ?
or does it even matter since they are on grammas ?
would they benefit on the grammas without any feet at all ?

I use the spikes with the SubDudes. It lets them firmly couple to the platform and prevents movement.

Thanks. I'm now on the quest to get one (posted in WTB thread, hopefully I'd get lucky). wish they made one 18.0"(w) x 26.0"(d) I have the Auralex Gramma and it is 23" L x 15" W x 2.75" high. That is 3" shy on the width and length, or 1.5" on each side for your sub.. That should be fine if your sub feet are in 1.5" from the edges. MY sub is the Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus and it is 15" W by 22" deep. The Gramma works great. I use the Outlaw supplied pointed/spike and disk with recessed dimple for spike point setting on top of the Gramma. I was skeptical but the Gramma does make an audible improvement and tighten up the bass. Quote from Rich: ".....I got mine from eD but the Subdude is basically the same thing as the eDs except mine was made to fit my A5s-300 s. They have many different sizes depending on the model/size of your sub......" That's a great idea for those who don't think the SubDude or Gramma will fit. This song played on your system at loud levels will also help tighten up on the sub bass.

Chuckie
I thought you would pick Pomp and Pipes (RR-58) to show off the good tight bass performance. That's a nice selection, but if you want to try an alternative give ORGAN SENSATION by FELIX HELL (RR-101) from Reference Recordings. Just take down all your knick-nacks before playing this one. ;D ;D A really awesome albums for testing your sub woofer.

Chuckie, this is also a great recording that gives your sub(s) a workout. Remember to remove your dentures first! ;D ;D

I put one of my subs on an iso pad from elemental designs. Every window in my house still shakes. In fact I think it shakes more now that there is more contact to the floor now instead of the little rubber feet its big pieces or foam on every corner. But it looks cooler
