I can't get my head around how high people mount their tv panels...it seems to be a USA thing...most people in Asia will have the mid point of the screen at eye level from their viewing position ,Europe too as far as I have noticed...
Ok granted most of you have a fireplace to deal with...but still...maybe you all sit in the front row at the cinema too...

I blame interior design shows on TV for people thinking this is a good location for a screen.

Whoever thought up putting a tv above a fireplace is an idiot. But then who the hell uses a fireplace anyways. Its like a damn hot tub. People think oooh what a cool idea. Ill use that all the time. Then, it never gets used. I install cable and I bet only 5% of people use their fireplace. So whats the piont. They dont make you cool or even look cool at that matter.

My TV is a few inches higher than the ideal height (eyes at mid screen) but that is because when I was shopping for a stand locally that was as close as I could get. It's close enough that it works but I might replace it somewhere down the road.Of course with a DLP it is more crucial to get the height correct and wall mounting is not really an option. I think we see so many TVs mounted high because people are obsessed with being able to wall mount them like a picture. And where do you typically mount a picture?Up high around eye level when standing.Plus some people go high in order to utilize the floor space below for some type of furniture. I think the over the fireplace thing happens a lot because houses with a fireplace typically have the fireplace as a focal point of the room and many people tend to gravitate to placing the TV in the natural focal point also. That ends up being where the fireplace is so they just go up in order to not block the fireplace. Of course once it became the "in" thing to do a lot of folks are just copying what they have seen. If it works for you however, more power to you.

Perhaps we should change thread title to: Why the hell has sorbe mounted his TV so high? lol lets not bust his balls over it. He has a fireplace and looks like thats his only option. But in general I cringe everyday doing installs when people want it up high. You cant talk sense into some people. .lol

The bottom line is please yourself, even if no one else likes it.

I use my fire place all the time, I ripped out the garbage gas log as soon I moved into the house. I live in Michigan and on a cold day there is nothing like a rip roaring fire and a cold toddy. Most people are just to lazy to have a real fire place, that being said I would never think about putting a tv above it. I prefer eye level.

Lol, while some parts can be quite warm, others can get quite chilly (I'm looking at you San Francisco ). Also, you live in Indiana not the tropics lol. While summers get hot (I'm from Illinois) winters can get very cold and that is when people will use the fireplace. Regardless, I agree with you that hanging a TV high above a fireplace is not an ideal location but do realize that for some people it's the only option because of their room layout.
