Well, the 5.0 has been rocking for a while now and REALLY sounding good. I was slowly collecting the drivers for my substage and have had them all for a couple months now. After buying my house in March, I haven't really had the time or money to do anything with the substage......until now. I received a bunch of Home Depot gift cards for my birthday, Memorial Day weekend, so went to HD and picked up a "handful" of the sheet goods I need for this monster build. DRIVERS: Two Elemental Designs 19Ov.2's in sealed 2.25 cu ft enclosures - and Four Elemental Designs 13Av.2's in sealed 2.25 cu ft enclosures - So this will be a two-way substage. The 13A's will handle the low, low end, say from 0-35 Hz and the 19O's will handle from 40 - 70 Hz. Or somewhere in that ballpark. The enclosures are designed to naturally have them play well in these areas. I drew up the enclosures and cutsheets a while back. These will be built just like my 5.0, laminated 1/2" MDF with hopefully enough bracing to minimize cabinet resonance. Looking like I'll need 10 sheets of 1/2" - As I said, picked up 5 sheets of 1/2" over last weekend and made all the rough cuts on 5 layouts. Here is 5 sheets of 1/2" mdf - Should be pretty wild in the man room when all is said and done. Wish I didn't live on a teacher's salary.

The bracing in your drawings (specifically the 1903? on the right) caught my attention. On paper those complex cutouts with multiple ninety degree corners meeting in close proximity looks cool.
I think that once you begin trying to cut it out, you will find that the design is not very functional. When you begin making multiple cuts in the MDF that reduce it to such small cross sections, you expose it's structural weakness. It begins to come apart. This manifests in hairline cracks that run the length of the sheeting visible within your cut edges. You can begin to see the multiple layers of fiber that make up the board.
Where there are such thin pieces with fulcrum points on inside cut edges, I believe you will see structural weakness and with longterm exposure to profound stresses, failure.
While I know airflow is a priority, I believe a remodel using curves instead of sharp corners and leaving a little more "meat" on the braces is in order.
I found hole saws to make this pretty easy. The doorknob style saws go up to five inch readily. IIRC I used a 5, 3, 1.5 for my baffles.
I am by no means any sort of authority, but I found that when using 3/4 MDF pieces reduced to less than 1 inch in cross section they became weak. I think that will be more apparent in 1/2 inch MDF
I was also advised to round over the edges of the baffles to reduce turbulance and possiblle noise. It is probably pointless, but I did it. It even further reduces the cross setion of the thin segments.
If you decide to use hurricane nuts for the drivers or amps. Take them onto the drill press and drill a small hole through the ring on each one. When you set them drive a short finish or panel nail trhough the hole you drilled to ensure they do not turn. It will save you headaches down the road if you ever have to take them apart and reassemble.
I can't wait to see your talent put to this project.

Thanks DS!! The drawings are just rough ideas, and were more for me to be able to see where the interlocks would happen between the braces. The windows in the bracing will probably be closer to 1.5" wide ribs, like in my HT 5.0. Airflow in the cabinet is not an issue since this is sealed. It is probably a good thing to have some obstructions to keep waves random in the cabinet. And I will probably be putting in a good lining of 703 in the cab's. The baffles are going to get the matching treatment as my HT 5.0. So there will be nearly a 1" roundover on two sides of the baffle. I learned my lesson on hurricane nuts on my first sub build 5 years ago. NEVER AGAIN. I appreciate the constructive criticism and keep it coming if you see anything else!

Those braces look nice. Why are the cutouts at the joints so wide?

Thanks guys!
The lockings for the bracing is so large cause I need to cut out the second piece to laminate them together to be 1" thick, like I did my towers, center channel and surrounds. The whole cabinet will be 1" thick, laminated 1/2" except for the baffle, which will be 2" thick.

Looks great but the complexity of your build isn't really needed. You could have gotten the same or better results with less cutting and time. I've done so many boxes over the years, you begin to appreciate the time you can save by making things simple.... That being said, the build is also fun the first few times.... Not so much later on lol
I look forward to seeing the boxes finished, good drivers. What are you going to power them with?

I enjoy it and it's one of my few hobbies so I go all out(relative to my ability). Plus these enclosures will match the rest of my HT (though most won't see or appreciate the craftsmanship....that's why their mine ). I will be joining the Cult of the Sanway.

If it is worth building, it is worth overbuilding. I built my home the same way. I hope it stands out here on the countryside for a hundred and fifty years...

Agreed n8! I can't wait. Hopefully by November. Agreed ds! That's awesome that you built your house. I would love to build a house. Drew up one of the 19O cabinet braces and will get it cut this afternoon- Have two cabinets worth of bracing cut and flushed for the 13A's. I can't believe I did this for my other 5 HT speakers.
