I read all these magazines and websites and have my wish lists just like everyone else. I've been fortunate enough to slowly build what some consider a really nice system. But, I can't help but wonder, how do people afford this stuff? So here's the question..... What would you guess the average annual income of a person that spends $800-$1000 on an amplifier? I guess also it might matter if they are married or not! LOL

$800 to 1000? Anyone can afford those, all it takes is a little saving. And that is not a high-end price - add another couple zeros.

Yeah I know - I subscride to Stereophile too. I just wanted to pick a moderate price level for the discussion. Heck everyone I know thinks that what I have in my turntable is insane!

Sometimes I even use water instead of milk on my cereal if that's what it takes.

800-1,000 for an amp is a whole lot of money to most people that aren't into this hobby. Most people are happy with a $300 HTIB. So it depends on who you ask.
My cousin spends Stereophile kind of money on his gear. But he makes a ton of money per year. So five figures on an amp to him is like 800-1,000 for me.
It's too hard to say what the average income of the 800-1k amp buyer is. Some wealthy folks don't spend crazy money on gear, and some average income folks do lol.

This thread had me curious what the average US salary is. A quick google came up with $47000 per annum.
Is this on the money? (Pun intended)
Dave.

I tend to buy used quite often. If I had to buy new, my quality of components would have to drop.

I don't think you can equate what someone makes per year to what they'd spend on an amp.

I read somewhere that was saying that, many of the buyers of Stereophile type products are actually a single, minimum wage recluse type of guy. I could almost believe that.

Yep, that is the case sometimes. I wouldn't say they make minimum wage though.

In my experience meeting other audiophiles at GTG's and high end dealers, there seems to be a large percentage of doctors who buy high dollar gear.

There was a topic on another forum - maybe Audio Circle - the question was did you spend more for your audio system or your car? Surprising number said they spent a lot more on their audio system. Guess everyone has different priorities.

Where I work, many have boats,Harleys or race cars. All kinds of expensive hobbies. Everyone thinks I'm crazy that I spend a fraction of what they do on my hobbie, which is Music/Audio

I went to T.H.E Show here in SoCal, and the prices were insane! I mean I could have walked out of there spending 1 million on a 5.1 system in a heart beat...but I tell ya man.. some of the really big ticket items, didn't sound all that. And those guys had the rooms setup and etc. The only system that came right next to live music to me (because I was able to compare) was the Einstein gear being played through Acapella Violon MK VI... that was the ONLY set that blew me away. IF I had the $$$ to spend that would be the gear for me.....
but going back ... The way I see it, most of us who are here and have to ask how much, can't really afford that crazy stuff....but manufacturers like Emotiva who still believe on making a superb product at a reasonable price for those who love music and love to have a system that is apart form the basic stuff you buy at Best Buys...are the only way to go.
Doc.

I'm extremely thankful for companies like Emotiva. If it wasn't for Emotiva I wouldn't be the proud owner of an RPA-1. I would still be running a 32 year old NAD amplifier and a 30 year old cdp.
