Hi, just got my X-Ref 12. Amazing looking.
My receiver (Onkyo) broke down a few months ago and I am now temporarily using a crappy Sony model STR-DE885. Waiting for the XPA + XSP option as soon as made available.
For now, the Sony receiver has a PreOut for Sub. Its a single RCA pin. To connect it to the X_Ref, do I use a RCA Y cable ? I tried connecting a single RCA to Sony and single to one of the RCA inputs on the sub, but cannot hear anything.
Or is there something else that I am dong wrong.
Thanks for your inputs.

Connect it to the *other* sub input. Or use a y-cable adapter, that's what I do....

I thought that there was one input on the sub marked for "single input"... i.e. if you only have one out, plug it into that input. if you have stereo, plug into both.

I don't recall how it's marked, but you're correct. The RCA splitter is completely not necessary.
I'm wondering if the problem is with the settings on the receiver, not how it's hooked up.

Thanks your inputs.
Just bought a RCA Y cable. Unfortunately it still does not work. No noise from Subs. But if I tapped the RCA end that gets connected to the Receiver, the sub does wake up with a loud thud. I guess my receiver must be dysfunctional. Never used the PreOut Sub output on this receiver.
My bigger concern is I want to be sure that the issue is not the Sub itself. I don't mind waiting a while till the XSP + XPA combination is available. And find myself at that point with a defective sub and no longer within the 30 day return period.
Is there anything I can do to check if the sub is functioning correctly. For the moment I have asked my friends if anyone can lend me their receiver - waiting for them to confirm.
Thanks.

Does the sub have hi-level (speaker) inputs? If so, use that. You'll have to run a speaker cable to the sub, but it will work...

A couple of thoughts...
- Do you have the receiver set up correctly (Subwoofer = Yes)? - Are the levels set? - Do you hear "noise" out of the subwoofer during the speaker level matching process (being an older model... it's done manually)?
Once you have confirmed that the receiver is, in fact, set up correctly, and you still get no sound, walk over an push down the rotary button to wake it up manually. See if you get sound then...
The X-Ref subs have an "auto sensing" wake-up feature. If there's not enough voltage at the input, it won't wake up automatically.
One final note, what "mode" are you listening to...? If "2-Channel Stereo" or "Direct" is selected, you will NOT get a signal to the sub using that receiver.
To get a signal to the sub from 2 channel (2.0) sources, you must be in the "Auto Decoding" mode.
Hope this helps...

Never used the PreOut Sub output on this receiver. Ah ha...... I bet if you check your receiver's setup menu, it's set to " Subwoofer = No". If so, change it to " Yes".

WOW, thanks Doc1963. I feel a bit foolish for not having checked the subwoofer setting. Assumed that all ports would work by default. Anyway...musical bliss - the next several hours are going to be spent listening to the sub roll !
Also, just bought the ERC-2 too. Awesome.
Thanks again. Thanks all for pitching in.

I figured that was probably it (as I stated about 7 posts ago). Glad you got it working. Now go enjoy it!
