^I would be interested in that as well as he has mentioned in many a thread (and alluded to it in this one in an earlier post) that all well-made electronics sound the same and the only real difference is room, speakers, and the recorded quality of the media played. Now that he has some good equipment (not that his previous equipment wasn't good) if he will be so quick to jump in on other threads admonishing others for hearing a difference with their new equipment? Being that I haven't said it yet; congratulations on your purchase, Cosmo. Welcome to the world of higher hi-fi. Your link and purchase has whetted my appetite for this piece of equipment. I think sometimes i just sit here and blend so far into the music, i forget to do critical listening. I've always enjoyed the music more than the gear. Is that bad ;D But i have learned to take some time and critique my recent gear purchases.

Those meters on your amp are awesome! +1 on the meters. Did you document that build here also? Proboard's search function isn't the best.

Is that bad ;D I find myself doing the very same thing, really getting lost in the music. Then I have to slap myself as a reminder that isn't what being an audiophile is all about, and I start listening critically again. thinking about my next purchase. ;D

I had to re-read your post because your critical listening is different from my critical listening. For me, critical listening is listening to the composition of the piece and listening to the "story" that the composer is telling. Think of a typical Sonata Allegro style composition (usually the first movement of a Classical, Romantic, or Empresionistic era composition) and the story the composer weaves as he moves from the Exposition, with Themes A and B, through the Developement and back to tonality in the Recapitulation. An easy example is the first movement of Beethoven's 5th Symphony; the entire Exposition consists of 8 notes with the second 4 being a repeat of the first 4 but a 5th lower. From there Beethoven runs through several minutes of compositional developement of that thematic idea until returning to the theme in full at the end of the piece. That's my critical listening. ;D Now you know why listening to Rap/Hip-Hop is almost a Kurt Cobain shot gun blast to the head inducing event for me. ;D

I was thinking about getting the balanced version. Just never really heard a difference when using a balanced system. Did this with my XDA-1 and Class D Amp. Both are true balanced. It sounded great but compared to single ended..... I couldn't tell the difference. So i opted for just the regular pre amp they had. In my 2-channel system there was a noticeable difference with the XDA-1 running balanced to my VTL's. My runs are reasonably long and running balanced it is just dead quiet - that really seemed to help open things open up, and the bass is great. The XDA-1 sounds great unbalanced too, but I like balanced so much I'm now thinking I might have to go with the Wyred4Sound DAC-2 since the XDA-2 won't have an HT bypass to let my analog preamp 'play through'.

KD, when I got my USP-1 it didn't sound what other reviewer suggested and I was about to box it and return it. The sound was hot on the midrange and highs, It was cold, analytical and didn't find the sound to be exciting. My friend in this forum told me to use attenuator (12db) and you will hear what USP-1 is all about. At first, I didn't think such device would fix my issue of aggressive volume and hot mid and highs. I place an order and the attenuator arrived after few days and plug them in. It was immediate that made me say WOW. I have been listening to John Lennon "imagine" since I was a teenager so I know what this song should sound. Before, John's voice was harsh and never sound right. After plugging the attenuator 12db, the soundfield expand both vertical and horizontal. The voice and piano are very realistic as if John was actually singing in the stage. The decay have also extended that make you want to listen for a lifetime without leaving the couch ever again. Now, I can say USP-1 will stay here for a long time unless XSP-1 is far better then I will consider an upgrade.
