in belgium... so a long long..... long bit to ride my pushbike i got it finished today. well that is except for the fan controller and it's psu. also didn't make any pictures. i'm really tired and thought about tit to late. so i will post a pic tomorrow as it is finished, and post the long post when the entire system is up and running. oke? grtz Matthieu

Hey guys Back again..
Speakers here are done.. amplifier has been put together.. Just started the test phase after which i will tighten up the wires and post my long post with pics and explanation.
But for now I have a question.. all seems to work here but one thing.. the system goes on when power applied to it..so the push button seems to have no function. When I push it..there is also no response.. so the system reacts as in fig 4a in the soft start manual. Which isn't right. I checked and the jumpersare in the right position.
Does any of you use the soft start? If so.. how does the system respond when using a push button? Is that on / off? Of on / standbys as the switch.and what exactly does the standby modus entail? Lights on the NC's on or off. Dlcp display on or off?
For now I'm a bit bunkered by this because I can't close out the system.. and connect them for first sound but ofcourse also happy that all else seemed to go all right..
Thanks for answering. And am looking forward to do the long post.

Glad to hear of the progress! Odd problem, though. You do have the power switch in the hot line of the power in line, correct?

No thoughts on the supply with 40.000uF worth of Slit Foil capacitors? I would have seriously considered that one instead. Looking forward to your honest assessments. Even if it's a tie, building something yourself is a very satisfying experience and makes you appreciate good commercial designs like Emotiva's. Good luck! Switchers are lighter and more compact. The high frequency of operation means smaller transformers and less capacitance needed. With ONE of the SMPS600 per module, I'm certain you've got more than enough juice. Shielding, orientation, setup and cable dress THAN become very important. See my thread 'Idea Noodle' for a block diagram of an nCore400 based biamp setup for 2-way Magnepans. With a sub-out.

Helped someone put them together recently so they are on loaner for a week or so. While these are far from ideal pairing with my setup these are my impressions of them using horns...yeah not ideal big power with sensitive speakers: *Compact, doesn't make any significant heat, discrete Class D implementation. Very easy to build. No solder iron needed. Could build this with a screwdriver and pliars. *Great driver control, smooth and grainless from bottom to top. Performance tapers off as you go up in frequency, but the highs never get ugly. *Bass Punches hard and is of high quality. Great "blackground" that even compensates for grayness in my chain- like opposite how LCD sucks at rendering black. *Smoothness and polite/safe sound leads to lack of transparency...i have a few albums that i know sound bad and they sound tolerable and even fun with this amp. *Excellent clarity, openness, lack of veil, no haze. This thing is better than many SS class A and AB amps that i've heard. No mosfet haze or coloration and no dead paralleled small signal BJT sound. *Slightly warmish neutral FR, no glare. No noise. Can put my ears to a 100+db/w super tweeter and nothing. Would be dead quiet in an inefficient/ideal matched system. **Devoid of details (except the obvious ones), ambiance, and tube distortions. I'm sure this thing measures well objectively, though i've never bothered to check it out. Not a very detailed amp at all, at least with my setup. Like looking at a really good drawing a of a tree, but the leaves and colors filling in are very homogenous. The outer edges of the tree image are done perfectly and its all still high res. Not much effort to portray background or anything else. The basic compromise with this amp is to make everything sound good, great driver control, great bass, efficiency, no heat at the expense of details and transparency. Definitely potential with this Ncore technology. Would be very interested in these or the higher end models if i ever needed 200w+

Amazing this thread is over five years old now and still a very relevant technology and implementation. Good to see new builds continue, anyone considering a multichannel?

Wow 😮 Just look at all that HEAVY, overkill electrical cabling all over the floor....It made me think of going past a Con Edison work zone....only thing missing are the workers watching the pretty girls walking by....and THEY are missing too!

Interesting report jh4db536. My friend and I also built a pair of the Hypex NC400 Kits about 6 months ago and also found the assembly to be very easy. But that's where the similarities ended: he absolutely loves them, their detail, and their imaging. In fact, we both went from an electronics agnostic stand, believing that there shouldn't be any difference between well designed/implemented amplifiers, to realizing that wasn't true. Casey

In the end, I am happy with my XPA-5 for the duty is serves, and I had other things I wanted to spend disposable income on. And, I agree with Casey Leedom - I have never felt mine were lacking detail. To the contrary, mine present more detail than I was use to in a very clear, distortion-free manner. Mark

Bill There's really nothing fancy other than I have the wrong lengths of xlr & speakOn cables (moved into a smaller place). I do not believe in fancy cables BTW hehe.

Would be very interested in these or the higher end models if i ever needed 200w+ So...I was looking at the internals of your amp and wondering - could the wiring approach (internally...not the pile behind the amp) have something to do with what you are hearing? When I built mine, there was very strict advice on pathways of wiring to avoid issues with sound. I have not looked to see what the latest blogs say. But, I wired mine as I did for a reason. It might be worth re-wiring yours to see if it makes a difference. See page 9 for how my wiring is laid out. Note the relative positions of the power supply and amp modules, the routing of the wiring relative to each, and the twisted wire approach I used. All were said to be important. What I was advised to do was to twist the incoming wiring pairs and not cross over the power supply or the amp module...to route around them. And, to ensure the incoming power supplies didn't cross over the various other internal lines...and to do twisted pairs everywhere. See my layout on page 9 for what I ended up with. Compare it to yours. They are very different. From what I read 5 years ago, the recommended approach I used was to avoid issues with noise. I am no electrical engineer, so don't expect me to explain. I just followed advice of experts. And, mine sounds awesome. You...have issues with your sound that sound way off from mine. It is likely worth trying different wiring on yours. Mark

Yes, my friend and I also twisted all of the wires like you did Mark ( klinemj) ... although not quite as neat as you managed — I'm impressed! In particular, in jh4db536's picture above, the Speaker Terminals are hooked up yet, so we can't see if the wires there were twisted in the final assembly ... I wonder if sheathing them in conducting braid would have improved noise immunity even more or whether that would have led to too much Inductance/Capacitance ... Casey

Hey just wanted to clarify, the amp isn't finished in that pic. The wires are all braided and twisted nicely and i didn't take internal pics at that step - not that I believe it would contribute to any issues. The amp is quiet as a rock in terms of noise and hum. Blackness rendering is top tier
So I have mentioned my high efficiency setup is Not ideal for this amp (97dbw speakers aren't going to pair well with an amp like nc400). The noise floor and noise shaping is going to filter and smooth over the details on the speakers that I have. I am comparing it relative to a tube setup that is well matched to the speakers to provide maximum details.
In absolute terms, it's way above other SS amps that are comparable imo. If I ever get speakers that would be a good match, I would strongly consider the ncore.
Low level details and transparency is imo where this amp performs weakest from my subjective experience.. When you have a amp that is inherently smoothed and highly damped it tends to lose those low level details and some transparency.

You may not believe the twisting and routing would lead to issues, but this was pretty highly stressed on forums about building them, and this started from people at Hypex stressing it.
Maybe, as you say, Hypex is just "not a good match" for your speakers. But, frankly, that would surprise me...esp. when it comes to your comments on detail.
