I'll try to post my thoughts over the new few days on these amps. BUT remember its my room and my speakers. These "thoughts" may differ from room to room and speaker to speaker. Also pre amps and what not can come into play. My Mark Leveinson pre amp (clone) is very faithful. Doesn't lie. So a horrible recorded song will sound horrible. It does do a great job at letting all those very slight notes and sounds shine trough. The soundstage is the best i have heard on a pre amp. Very accurate, with vocals spot on location. This pre amp was made to be the best, so sometimes you miss a few nice features but can get around them. I leave this pre amp on all the time because on start up and shut down it will pop my speakers. You can get around this a few ways. Shut the amps off first or add a soft start circuit. But i just choose to leave it on (uses 7 watts at idle). Onto the XPA-1's. The soundstage is something i have not heard from any amps i've owned. It's not really stereo..... I'll try to explain this. It's like it split into 10 or so sectors. Sounds come from everywhere and transition with serious accuracy. What i am trying to say is, that it is hard to identify where the sound is coming from. Like when you close your eyes and the speakers aren't really there. Like the concert is right there. You can feel the air coming from the singers mouth. That air carries weight. The pluck of the guitar string is an actually pluck that has character. Not just a speaker making guitar sounds but a guitar in front of you. My speakers are true full range (my opinion). They have never had bass like this. Some songs have bass notes tht overlap each other. They might vary a little but some amps smear this. It's hard to identify that there was two in the first place. But the XPA-1 makes it easy to hear. A bass note comes in and the other is just there as well. Each having its own personality and character. This is apparent at very low volumes and extreme volumes. So onto the stupid crazy stuff. I have no subwoofers in this main system. One of my favorite demo songs is "Trust" by Megadeath. The intro drum solo is spectacular. Is just pounds the sh** out of you. You're right there at the concert. The drum hits are so realistic. I will post a video

Congrats Matt! They're awesome. You gonna make some handles for 'em? You know, initially I also thought they needed to have C shaped handle replacements on the front as well. Then I thought about it for a while. These XPA amps are so heavy that if you put handles on the front AND tried to pick them up that way, there would be significant chance of personal injury. The twisting force of 90 lbs of steel coming off of a shelf if you pulled them out by the handles could easily break your wrists or severely injure your shins / ankles. Further if you picked them up the handles, you would likely damage the connectors on the back if you set them down vertically while holding them like that. Lastly, if those handles ever cut loose while you were lifting them up vertically, they would probably shear off your feet. The short screws and small threads on the face plate would be under a LOT of stress I bet they were never designed for. Putting something decorative in those spots is one thing, putting something structural there that you can yank on and pick the amps up with is quite another. These treasures are wonderful and a joy to behold, but I would expect everyone would agree that they would hate to see any customers or XPA amps damaged if they ever pick up any inertia while you were holding them. I would think very carefully if putting handles on them is really a good idea.

I would think very carefully if this is really a good idea. The amp case would have to be reinforced to use real handles. Probably will do just plates or decorative handles or even both. It's best to place and move the amps like a heavy box. Grabbing diagonal corners and lift with the knees :

You don't really need a subwoofer. If you decide to post a Round 2 video with no phone toppling, I'd love to see it. ;D

I liked reading about how you described the details it had. It sounds great! So are you making use of the fully balanced circuitry it has?

OSHA requires employers to take steps to reduce exposure levels when the TWA reaches 90 dB(A) I realize that this is an old post, but in a CEDIA lecture, Floyd Toole mentioned that OSHA's limits still allow for hearing loss. The intention is that when you reach the end of your career, you can still carry on a conversation. It really just prevents serious damage. I thought it was an important point for anyone who bases their exposure upon the OSHA exposure limits. Interesting to know that re-recording mixers have mandatory breaks to give their ears a rest. .........says the poster who wants to have 7 channels and amplification that can hit 130db......... ;D ;D ;D
