My Mark Leveinson pre amp (clone) ... I leave this pre amp on all the time because on start up and shut down it will pop my speakers. You can get around this a few ways. Shut the amps off first or add a soft start circuit. But i just choose to leave it on (uses 7 watts at idle). ... My speakers are true full range (my opinion). Mm, my Weiss DAC2, which I use as preamp also does the popping on start up and shut down. This can be avoided as you mentioned (I power the amps last and shut them off first) but when the Amarra computer player software (auto-) changes the Sample Frequency, it's the same problem. I try to avoid this most of the time by picking albums in the same frequency (say all 24/96 for example) but I wonder if you know of a solution for this? And, dude, who would have thought that two 15" woofers in each speaker would make them "full range"? ;D

Just ordered the material for the XPA-1 face plates. 3/4" thick ;D
It was around $140 for the two plates (3/4"x7"x17").

Good amp, XPA-1. Regarding overkill - depending on impendance curve of those Eminence woofers, those '1000 watt' are put to good use, i'm sure. Walls around speakers seem a bit naked and could do with some treatment, perhaps. Other than that you seem to be pretty well covered, enjoy the sound!

Hi, i love the look of your system...just got a pair of XPA-1's a few months ago and picked up a pair of Von Schweikert VR-33's. what an amazing sound! Wonderful match-up. I may have to attempt a review soon.
My question: I really like the looks of the Salamander rack. Are you using two different models? The one on the left is shorter with narrower compartments (for lack of a better word). Could you comment on that please?
Thanks and enjoy your system,
KP

When i built my first TT, the table was too high and would start blocking the TV. So i chopped 7 or so inches off one rack. Also the shelves are adjustable and you can add more if needed

KD, You surely have alot of time in your hand and money to spend! The lady is a school teacher and teaches swimming lessons at the local elementary school. So, yes i do have a lot of free time. I would rather be machining cool custom plates then laying on the couch ;D

That's really thick plate and seems it can survive even you drop the amp ;D

A little hiss but it's not noticeable sitting on the couch. It comes with high efficiency speakers but i won't be letting my speakers go for a long time. A true winner in my book. Real sound from 25hz to over 20khz. I have Klipsch RF-7 originals, rated at 102db sensitivity and I have no hiss at any time. Might be time to rethink your "clone" or find yourself a nice power filter. IMO.

Just picked up 2x XPA-1s, brand new (but tested last night) for $1600 in Australia. Factoring in shipping costs and import taxes, not a bad pickup! The previous owner had seven, yes 7 of the bastards, but decided to keep his HT to 5 channels, so offloaded the other 2. I nearly fell over when I saw his cabinet. I can provide links to pictures if anyone is interested in his setup. PM if interested.
Anyway, I can't wait to get these hooked up! Will be a while with work commitments though. Now to get an XSP-1 in the new year! Have my Clearaudio Emotion running to a Marantz SR7005 and to 2x UPA-1s currently. Should provide a nice upgrade!
By the way what is the model of the hifi rack in the pictures on the Emo homepage? Looks like a Pro-Ject 10.1, XDA-1,ERC-2, and XSP-1 in the rack.

My XPA-1's have started to click. Very annoying. Just seems strange that the heat sink clicks. It's designed to dissipate heat not act as a marching band.
Just yesterday, i started soldering up my LM1875 gain clone amp. Very minimal in comparison to the XPA-1's. And it has 98% less power at only 20 watts per channel.
These (XPA-1's) might be for sale soon.

Some of my XPA-1’s clicked when warming and cooling, at first. It took some time (months?), but either they have stopped or I just do not notice them.
