Issue: in the latest Emotiva newsletter they advertise the SP-1 The problem is that the DC-1 is no longer available. So their advertising is to accessorize the DC-1 that is no longer available for sale. So, is Emotiva trying to pawn sell off extra stock? Hint that the DC-1 or dare I say that the DC-2 will soon be in production? Is it something else I don’t see? 🤔Well...it doesn't bode well for the longevity of the SP-1 as a product.

Wondering about wireless bluetooth earbuds for PC. Any suggestions? I have the echo buds which sound good but they got pretty finnicky with a PC and it just wasn't as seamless with it.

Got in an iphone 12 mini. My main purpose is to try and shoot some HDR video and hopefully better quality videos in dark lighting. Let's see how it does. I tend to upgrade phones slowly. So it's interesting to see how phones have progressed. In some ways they have, but in other ways, I feel underwhelmed.
Here are quirks that apple still hasn't fixed. - Batteries become useless after a few years. - We are still not able to upgrade our space easily. Want more space, buy another $800 phone. - The transfer mechanism is much better now. However, the fact that we have to physically move a SIM Card - and often one needs a new SIM- is a serious detriment for user friendliness. - We are still having to shop for protective cases and screen protectors. - My iphone 12 mini came without a wireless charger - a key feature of these phones. As these command premium prices, the features need to work out of the box. - Finally people that want small screens are still being given the shaft on the cameras (No iphone 12 mini pro).

The cameras in phones these days work remarkably well in low light... HOWEVER, they still have a small sensor, and a very small lens... And this limits the overall amount of light that they can collect...
This means that, in low light, they're going to have to trade off between resolution and noise.
And, even with the ability to use "computation" to optimize between those two, a phone camera is never going to measure up to a REAL camera with a full-sized lens. They do very well in bright light... or in low light at limited resolution... but you'll run into their limitations pretty quickly in low light.
The real issue with batteries is that they're so difficult to change when they do reach their end of life... (We're still nowhere near a high-capacity rechargeable battery that doesn't have a limited life expectancy.) (To be blunt... they're just assuming you'll be ready to trade-up to a new phone right around when the battery dies anyway...)
And, as for SIM cards, you're better off NOT storing stuff long term on your phone anyway... (Don't count on being able to migrate things to a new phone - it usually works - but not always.)
Wireless charging is VERY handy - and well worth the money. My Samsung Galaxy S20 came with a wired charger... but I much prefer a good wireless one (and it doesn't wear out that little charging plug). It does seem kind of sucky that Apple doesn't include ANY charger with their new phones (but I guess they're just grubbing for that extra $).
I've found Otter Box cases to be very nice...
(And I much prefer their attitude about "works well vs pretty".)

Don't bet on batteries becoming useless "after a few years." My smarter half has had her iPhone for a LONG time & is having no problems with battery life or charging. Phone? Space? Never intended for that. Use Airdrop or iCloud instead. Amazon has perfectly functional cases for <$10 You want a wireless charger? I've got one I don't use. You can have it. And although Keith is right about noise going up as light goes down, I still find that my iPhone does marvelously well in low light with no problems. I'd also mention, as an aside, that since I got my iPhone 12, I've used my SLR exactly once. The phone's that good.

I'd also mention, as an aside, that since I got my iPhone 12, I've used my SLR exactly once. The phone's that good. I think with the coming of Night mode for iphone 11's Apple toook a huge leap forward in dark light photography. My wife has the 11 and it is surprisingly good at low light conditions. I gotta disagree that space wasn't meant for a phone. It depends on the use case. Like for me if I'm filming 4k HDR videos, each video file could easily become 5 to 10 gigabytes in size. My wife edits videos directly on her phone as well, causing the files to multiply in size. Backing up to icloud would require massive amounts of data when video is concerned quickly throttling my phone plan. Airdrop doesn't work if you're not near a PC etc. I appreciate the wireless charger offer. I have already purchased a nice wireless charger that also does my watch at the same time. So I'm okay. however, that Apple doesn't include this free is sort of iffy for me. The beef with the cases is this. The iPhones are beautiful designs. There's no doubt that they are fantastic to look at. The first iphone was introduced close to 15 years ago. They should have figured out how to go caseless. You'll notice that iphone ads don't have bulky cases though most people (that aren't brave) will immediately get a case. Why make a phone designed to be simple for people and expensive without truly making it simple? These basic requirements the good old Nokia's figured out some time ago. There was no need for a case with them. I never had to replace a battery on them, and the battery lasted days. The charger was always included. Granted they didn't have any high tech gadgetry but at least they did what I consider to be basic things.

That is an impressive find indeed, my friend. And it may come useful! However, it defeats the purpose of using a phone as a camera - convenience and portability. Whip it out and voila you are off recording. A trivial difference, but a notable reason why I use an iphone vs say a go pro or good quality video camera.

Perhaps you missed the fact that this drive has its own built-in 10 hour battery? Since the drive is wireless, drop the drive in one pocket, establish the link to the phone to activate when your phone turns on, and you can use both simultaneously when you open the phone. Your video streams wirelessly (in 4K) to the drive. At least that's what the ad seems to imply. There are numerous online reviews on YouTube. Look some up. Yes, it's an additional thing to carry, but you get virtually limitless storage for your camera wirelessly and with 4K transfer rates. It's also 5x5 inches.

I have to investigate this deeper. Since it is an SSD it's also immune to vibration that would be encountered in motion during filming. Well it looks like you can't live record to it. But (edit - you can). You can also playback your videos from the drive on the iphone in the field which is pretty impressive. Looks like it has some usability teething issues. But it's at least proof the technology is possible. In time, it will be more streamlined.

Hot on the heels of my HD 800S acquisition ( emotivalounge.proboards.com/thread/59094/garbulkys-sennheiser-hd800s-review ) Dan Clark Audio comes out with the Stealth headphones. A closed pair of flagship headphones which sets a new bar of low distortion. Plus it almost perfectly follows the Harmon Curve. With a distortion of -80db, it's pretty nuts running at the level of amps and even some dacs. I don't know if we've ever had a transducer that does this so consistently and so cleanly. This basically says that it produces inaudible levels of distortion to the human ear (!) Isn't that the holy grail?

HD800S appreciation: Having used the HD800 now for an extensive period of time, this is just one lovely headphone (once equalized). With previous gear I had trouble hearing the full range of the upright bass. You know what it's like. You hear the hint of the bass, you know it's there. But you know you're missing a lot of what it's doing or maybe you're not getting it in the right balance. And it had to do with two things a lack of low bass extension and congestion.
Finally with the hd800s, I think I am hearing the upright bass, its inflections and melody lines nicely balanced. I won’t kid myself and say that I’m hearing everything the bass has to offer, but I’m definitely getting a good dose of it and I’m finally able to follow the melody lines of the bass 😊

(HD800) Just too much work to dial it in for such little return. But it does a few things that are enjoyable. Many folks really love these but I just couldn’t get over the humps.

Here's something I love about the HD800S.
At 1:45 you hear a door open while they are recording. it squeaks and then closes offstage. I thought a door in our house opened and stopped the track. I may have been able to hear it on other headphones but it was never so obviously apparent than with the HD800S. The other impressive part is to be able to localize these large scale bass sound sources. On other headphones I was able to hear both, but the distance between them was never so apparent.
